Recently, on February 6th, I had received 2 guinea pigs from a friend of mine after she had told me she couldn't care for them anymore. When I got them, she had told me both were female, but one turned out to be a male and the other recently gave birth. The male was fine, for the most part, until after the first week or so of him being with me. I had concluded that he probably had mites, as he would itch uncontrollably and sometimes even squeal in pain. we've been giving him treatment for about 2 weeks, but to no avail. Recently, though, I had heard him start to squeal even more, so I decided to check the area he was itching, and it turns out that there was a huge 1 inch wide gash near his neck, and it was pretty deep, too. It's bleeding a lot, and I don't have the money to take him to the vet right now, so what should I do to help him heal/stop the bleeding? My other guinea pigs (I have 7, currently) don't have any symptoms of mites. I know the cause of his stress, but I can't do much about it till I finish moving out of my house.

I don't think anyone will be able to advise other than taking your poor piggy to be seen by a vet. If he has a gash it may need stitches? It would be worth ringing a few vets to see how they could help with payment costs, eg in installments. Please take him to a vet if he's in pain.

Hi and welcome

PLEASE see a vet; your boy urgently needs a hands-on examination and the appropriate vet strength treatment. If you have treated an advanced case of mange mites with low dosed pet shop stuff, you won't get anywhere. Without any treatment, he will die a slow death of needless suffering and agony.

If you really, really can't see a vet, please contact California Northern Cavy Rescue in Sacramento ASAP; they are your closest good welfare standard non-kill guinea pig rescue where your boy will be in safe hands and get the necessary treatment to save his life.
