Hello everyone,
I would first off like to say hi, I'm new here and I'm really glad I found this forum. My name is Aly and I have 2 male guinea pigs, one of them is named "S'mores" he is going to be 3 years old in April. My other guinea pig, Shaggy, is 2 years old.

I noticed about 2 weeks ago that Shaggy had been acting different, he stopped eating his hay, didn't wheek anymore when I fed them dinner, had crust around his eyes, and became very thin. After I noticed this, we set up a vet appointment for him on September 23. The vet told me he had an overgrown back tooth, and would need a teeth trimming but would have to be put under anesthesia. He mentioned how it is a big risk to put him under, as he might not make it because he is so weak and thin. They prescribed him with 2 different antibiotics for the pain (He prescribed us with TMS/SMZ and meloxicam) so, I've been giving it to him at the stated time.

I ordered him some Critical Care from Oxbow and syringes to feed him it. At first, he did enjoy it and ate it from the syringe. I would give him 10-15 ML of CC every 2 hours and he still continued to eat both his veggies and pellets like normal, just not the hay. 3-4 days later I noticed he was feeling a little better from his antibiotics. The crust was gone around his eyes and he actually did wheek when I gave them dinner but it came out as raspy. I kept giving him his CC every 2 hours so he can gain some weight for his teeth trimming, but now it seems like he's getting worse. I don't know if the antibiotics aren't helping with his pain anymore because he doesn't try to wheek at all and the eye crusts are back. Even worse, he is squinting his eyes and has these liquid white stuff in his eyes. On top of that, he will randomly stay in one place for a while, not moving and he stopped drinking out of his water bottle.

So, I've been giving him both his CC and water through a syringe now. I give him around 15-20 ML of water every 2 hours as well. I don't know if this is happening because of his overgrown back tooth or if there's more causing him to be like this. Could it be his antibiotic is doing more harm than good? I saw somewhere on here that antibiotics could cause guinea pigs to not want to eat if it's harming them. I don't know if that's true or not.

I need some advice though, should I go through with his teeth trimming procedure? I'm scared he won't make it because he's still so weak but it also really upsets me to see him in this state. I don't know if I should keep trying to get him to gain more weight, as he's still thin or if I should take the risk before his teeth become even more overgrown and his situation becomes a lot more worse. I'm trying my best to get him to be healthier but it just seems like he's getting more ill. He is still pooping and urinating which is good, he also still comes up to me whenever I greet him.

Any advice will help, thank you all in advance.

I’m so sorry to hear this.

Have you switched from the routine weekly weight checks and instead weighing him daily?
This is important with syringe feeding as it enables you to ensure you are getting enough syringe feed into him.
The issue is that syringe feeding a poorly piggy is about stopping weight loss. Getting them to regain lost weight takes a long time after an illness is resolved not usually done through syringe feeding (at least not usually in the short term). They regain it much slower than they lose it.

It’s a catch 22 now though - he you will want him strong enough for anaesthetic but if he doesn’t eat hay, his teeth will continue to over grow as he is jot chewing anything to wear them down. His tongue could become trapped and he then will struggle to swallow.

Regarding the antibiotics. If he is getting worse then it may be that a different antibiotic is needed.

The best thing is for you to have a discussion with your vet. They are best placed to advise regarding how well they think he will do with a teeth trimming and what needs to be done about his issues.

I hope he is ok

I'm sorry, teeth issues are not fun to deal with, for your or your piggie. Unfortunately, you are between a rock and a hard place here. There is always risk with surgery, but without wearing down his teeth properly your pig's back teeth will only continue to grow longer. At some point, there is no choice but to undergo the surgery. For what it's worth, I've had pigs and hamsters undergo anesthesia several times and have only ever had one complication (a seizure under anesthesia for one of my hams) which still didn't have any lasting effect after she woke up. I think the risk of anesthesia here is less than the risk of continuing on without dental treatment.
I would make sure to weigh your pig very regularly to catch any further problems early, as dental issues have the possibility of recurring. I would also suggest feeling the jawline of your piggie for lumps and bumps daily, as sometimes there is an underlying abscess causing dental problems that takes a while to puff up to a noticeable amount, and if you see weight decline or feel any lumps or bumps along the jaw, see your vet again ASAP.

All the best and hope things go well!

Thank you guys for your advice and yes, I'll probably go through with the surgery. I'm going to the vet soon so I'm going to talk with him about that and some other complications Shaggy has been having. I think there is more going on with him than just his overgrown teeth. :(

When I was going to syringe him his water this morning, he walked wobbly and then fell over to the side. He hasn't been wanting to move either, I checked his feet to make sure there wasn't anything going on there to prevent him to not move. His feet looked the same they always have, no issues. I don't know what else could be causing this, I feel very bad for my piggie because I'm trying to figure out what's making him act like this but I don't know. I'll ask the vet when I go soon, I hope he'll maybe know what's going on with him besides his teeth.

Update on Shaggy, my poor baby unfortunately passed away as I was getting ready to go to the vet. I gave him some water and food when I woke up and then I came back to find him gone. His buddy, S'mores, seems to be doing ok so far. I kept Shaggy near S'mores for a little so he could say goodbye to him. I'm going to miss him a lot and his wheeks. I plan on getting him cremated and to put his ashes in this necklace I have, so I can always have him with me. ❤️ I feel bad for S'mores too since they spent a lot of time together. I'm going to find a guinea pig rescue I can go to this weekend to get a new buddy for S'mores, I feel guilty to say that too because it feels like I'm replacing Shaggy. I'm also kinda nervous to introduce S'mores to a new guinea pig because he's pretty dominant and I wouldn't want them to fight.

((HUGS.)) I'm really sorry for your loss. Shaggy was clearly loved and you did everything you possibly could to help him get through. Best of luck with the rescue, I know it can feel weird to get another pig so soon, but it is probably the best thing for S'mores.

Oh no, I'm so sorry 😢 At least he passed away peacefully at home with you and S'mores.
RIP Shaggy, over the Rainbow Bridge 🌈❤️

Oh, I’ve just come across your thread and I am so sorry for the sad update 😞 It does sound like Shaggy had something more going on but he’s free from pain now and there’s nothing more you could have done (((Hugs))) I am thinking of you and S’mores at this sad time. Sleep tight Shaggy x
