Ziggy is a 7 year old male piggy. He is being treated by Simon at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton but it’s a 2 hour car journey so before I make the decision to go back up there I wondered if anyone could give me some advice.

Ziggy is being treated for mites at the moment, he had an injection initially and then a vial of Stronghold a week later and one more to be given in two weeks. He is on long term dog Loxicom and Gabapentin as he has a large tumour on his rump.

The problem at the moment is this....his hair is coming out A LOT, if you pull on the hair gently, clumps of hair come out and when I’m holding him I am covered in his hairs. He has a lot of bald places, his tummy, his rump, his legs and round his eyes. The skin underneath is very red with patches of sore places. Behind and in his ears the skin is very dry and flaky and he can’t bear his ears being touched. He has numerous fits throughout the day, mainly when I pick him up and put him back down again.

I don’t think he has ringworm as it’s not crusty and raised like I have seen in photos of ringworm but I do think it could be some type of fungal problem.

I wondered if anyone on here could suggest what it might be and what I could do to treat it before I decide to make the journey up to Northampton again.

Thank you for reading.

Please dont do anything to treat it yourself, please do see a vet. As he is being treated, then you should not give him anything else without a vet prescribing as it could interfere with the treatment he is already on.

We obviously cannot diagnose.
From your written description, it sounds like it might be mange mites with the fits and very sore skin (Hay mites are more of an annoyance) and it quite often looks worse before it gets better.
If it was fungal, then the treatment he is currently on won’t make it better. A vet could do tests to find out if is actually fungal.

Oh bless him. It sounds awful for him. I’d definitely take him back to the vets. Good luck hope it clears up soon.
