Hi everyone! I’ve not posted in months as started working full time last December-
So, I wasn’t sure where to put this as it’s kind of health as well. I’ve just finished a year long experiment with my guineas who are now over a year old. I decided to do the opposite of fleece and give them terracotta tiles, stones and bricks as ramps etc and in a year they’ve not needed their nails cut, they look the same as when they were 8 weeks.
I just wanted to share this as I think it’s nice they’ve not had that stress of monthly nail cuts. I adopted a fifth girl recently who had curled nails- I cut them a few weeks ago and they’ve stayed short.
Photos show Nut and new girl Opal at the front! 😊

Welcome back
Yes, it’s more natural surfaces that they would experience in the wild. I don’t need to cut Bill and Ted’s nails as much in summer as they go up and down a ramp covered in roofing felt several times a day which files their nails in their outside bunny ark.

Welcome back! I'll have to try that with my pigs, they hate getting their nails cut

Lovely to see you back on forum, Enjoyed seeing those photos of your piggies

Thanks all, we are moving to our new house very soon- the pigs will be in a movable run but I’ve created this grassy area for them- before it was just leaves and sticks lol
I’m trying to source old clay pipes that they can go through but love the felt idea on a ramp!

Such a good idea!

I was thinking of putting some tiles down in my girls C&C cage. They haven't got a ramp or anything. But I think they would just get very dirty quickly. I don't like taking them to the vets as it stressful for them

The tiles I use are old terracotta ones, must be unglazed but I use them only as ramps between my cages or leaning up against something. I don’t put them down flat as they would get covered in sawdust. They need to be at a fairly steep angle so that sometimes they slide back down and you hear the wonderful noise of their nails being shortened!
