Hi everyone! First let me say thank to everyone on this forum. It has helped me find answers to some of my concerns. I adopted Chipper from the SPCA two years ago. They estimated his age to be about 2. He was extremely malnourished and neglected by his previous owner. He is nice and plump now. He is a sweet cuddly boy who suckered me into taking him home by putting his paws up on the cage and insisting I rub his chin and nose. He loves his parsley and inhales it like a wood chipper chews up a sapling (hence the name.) His demeanor is generally chipper too. The only time it isn't is when he doesn't feel well. Unbeknownst to me, zoological streptococcus is rampant in the Guinea pig population in Rhode Island. I have had a long struggle to keep him as healthy and comfortable as possible. I am hoping I can get some feedback on a couple of concerns. He is on Metacam twice a day to keep the lymph nodes from swelling which leads to coughing and wheezing. The infection was bad in his jaw and in the skull behind his ear but the Metacam seems to do the trick most of the time. The infection was pushing up on his teeth but a little shaving down did the trick as well as some experimental subdural antibiotic beads. Last year the vet inserted antibiotic beads under his skin twice. I thought I was going to lose him before that first time but the beads did their job and he rallied. About 6 months ago he started to whimper a little when he pooped and recently a lot more. The vet said that the antibiotics may still have affected his digestion even though they were placed sub-dermally and that may be the cause of the discomfort. I wasn't satisfied by that answer. He already gets a little probiotic in a clementine section every night. He loves anything in the orange family. There are many discussions on the forum about crying when pooping. He does not have any urinary tract problems as far as I can tell. He drinks and pees a ton and there is no blood or calcification in the urine. He has no fecal impaction and I have cleaned him out a couple of times to make sure hay, fur or secretion build up isn't present. He cries when the Q-tip touches the left side (with his back against me). The next couple of days after cleaning he cries more. I don't know if I am helping or hurting at this point. I don't know what else to look for or consider. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It is clear on certain days he doesn't feel great but on the whole he is happy, eats lots of hay, wants love, begs for parsley and runs and popcorns. He runs less now because he breathes very hard and fast from the streptococcus and his little lungs and heart have been affected. I have not seen any lethargy or reduced eating or drinking. His quality of life has actually been pretty good believe it or not up until recently. I don't want him to suffer and the crying when pooping breaks my heart. This is definitely a quality of life concern for me. If there's anything else someone can think of to help, please share. Thank you, Sabrina

I've moved this to our health section so our specialists can advise accordingly. ;)

The pain when pooping needs to be investigated to find out what’s going on there. Has your vet recommended you do any tests?

With regards the probiotic you’re better off giving it to him near rather than in. Clementine. Too much acidic food can cause sores in the mouth. Antibiotics can cause a gut imbalance. I not ice he had them sub dermal so is he not on oral antibiotic? And what antibiotic was he given?

parsley is high in calcium so should be fed sparingly - once a week and only a few sprigs.

Have you been weighing him daily at the same time to see whether he’s eating enough hay?

Someone with more experience will be along soon to hopefully give you a more in depth answer.

Last question, does he have a friend you could use for poop soup?

I left another message for the vet to get him an appt. I think some type of imaging should be done. What's another few hundred dollars at this point lol. I think I have the world's most expensive Guinea pig and no, I am not wealthy. His mouth is fine and a single clementine wedge is very tiny. The vet said a couple of sprigs of parsley and the piece of clementine each day was fine since his urinary function has been normal. I could have her test the urine to make absolutely sure. He predominantly eats Timothy hay and orchard grass blend. It took him months to start eating it because he never had hay his first two years. Now he munches away on it all day like a proper piggie should. I am concerned because he has recently lost weight. I do weigh him on a gram scale. Not usually daily but I will now, thank you for that suggestion. There is only one vet in town who sees Guinea pigs and they are overwhelmed since everyone got a pet due to Covid. If she can't see him until April, I need a better plan than watching him cry. If he was lethargic or stopped eating I could take him through emergency (another couple of hundred dollars). I just don't know if those are the only criteria that constitute an emergency.

I can’t advise but want to say welcome and offer my support for your boy and you.
Holding you in my thoughts.

Welcome.

Definitely a vet visit needed. I’ve found when a couple of my boys had similar symptoms that it was bladder related issues. You need a vet to rule out infections or stones.

one of my boys overcame a UTI, but is on long term cystease now to help his bladder lining.

I hope you can get some answers

So three days and two calls later and the vet still has not replied. Cytease is apparently a U.K. product only. I could get it on Amazon for an absurd amount of money with a ship date in over a month but won't at least for now. I looked up the ingredients and some info and it looks like I can buy them separately and mix it myself. I want him checked out before I did that though. In my second voicemail to the vet I told her I wanted his urine and bladder checked. I thought asking specifically for that based on your replies and what I have previously read on the forum was necessary. We shall see if that happens anytime soon. In the meantime, I bought and started Chipper on the Oxbow Urinary Support biscuits. It has glucosamine like the Cytease as well as other ingredients. It is worth a try and gives me a starting point thanks to all of you. Please send out prayers that it will make him feel better soon and if it does, that I can keep getting it. It is sold out and back ordered everywhere. I was lucky to get the one small bag I did and pre-ordered more for the expected arrival date in February on Amazon. Since I cut way down on his greens especially the parsley, its like a little treat for him mid day. He loves his Metacam and actually begs for it at night. Between the morning and night doses of Metacam and now the Oxbow biscuit I hope he will feel like he is getting three treats and not miss his parsley. One can only hope. Be well everyone, Sabrina
