Hi all,

I became a piggy owner last month via a friend (long story!) and I just have a couple of queries. Firstly, we were given a lovely, large run which is ideal. Unfortunately the pigs have eaten all the grass on the one flat-ish bit of lawn and there is nowhere else for it to go. We do have concrete patios. Can I put the run on those? Would I need to cover the concrete with something?

Also, how often would I need to clean them out? I'm currently using shavings and fleece, and I clean out completely about twice a week. Is that okay? They are currently outside but I aim to bring them in for the colder months.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
We'd appreciate it if you add your location so we can help you more effectively. Personal details under your forum name, then location.

Runs can be put on concrete paths, as long as there's nothing sharp on the concrete, and it's flat. Maybe pick some grass for them to put in the run so they do not miss out on it. Remember the grass cannot have any sprays or weed killers put on to it. For wood shavings and fleece it will need to be cleaned out twice a week, as you say you do.

For bringing your piggies in the colder months, which cage are you going to put them in?

Thanks for the reply! I'll edit my location in a moment, but I'm based in Gloucester. During the colder months, I've got a Ferplast 120 whcich came with them. I've got 2 girl piggies, 2 female cats and two daughters. My husband is outnumbered!

I'm sorry but a Ferplast 120 is way too small for 2 piggies, I would look into buying a c&c cage for them indoors. They are very flexible, you can shape them to fit your room, and can edit the size.

What cage size should they be in then? I got all the stuff from my friend who had to rehome due to personal reasons. I had a look at the C&C cages but they all seem to be open topped and not substantial enough to cope with 2 children and 2 cats. I would also be getting an indoor (covered) run as well. My profile piccy cat (logged on via Facebook) is very fond of watching piggies and I do not wish her to take it a step further and discover a fondness for eating them.

C&C cage can be built with a cover (roof), you would cable tie one side of the grids to the edge of the roof, and the rest are connected together with cable ties. This leaving them flexible to open and close.

And how big should it be? I don't want to go too small but I need it to fit into our (small) sitting room!

Okay, I've had a look at C&c cages and kits on eBay and I like the idea, however I would like to see one IRL to see how strong it is. I'm currently put off after having used The connectors within a shoe rack which disintergrated! I'm in Gloucester.

Your in no immediate rush a 120cm cage is the minimum cage space for a commercial cage, many people use them on here and as you have a run too you can give them time in there everyday to stretch their legs! :)

Thanks! Space is an issue as we have a small house, so I'm thinking a covered run and a 120 should do for a bit.

120 or 140 is a good choice if you can't get a 140 then try and add a level to the 120 this is perfect for when they want to escape each other. It also adds some adventure!

I shall get my husband thinking about how to do it! We weren't planning on piggies for another year, but the offer was too good to pass up. I should hopefully have more money soon and then can think about a piggy palace for them.

I use the ferplast 120 for my 2 girls but they also have full run of my bedroom. You could attach the indoor run to the cage with cable ties if you want to give them more space or ensure they have a good few hours of floor time. With the attached run they should be able to jump in & out when they want or if they struggle large wooden bendy sticks from pets at home are ideal. This is how my girls get In & out image.webp
