i don’t know if its just my anxiety but i’ve come back from the vets and both girls have instantly flopped out in their cage and i’m now worried about potential heatstroke?! obviously the car is extremely hot and didn’t have the AC on very high as i didn’t want it blowing on them but now i’m worrying it may have been too hot for them and i’m freaking out..

will a guineapig move around and eat if they are suffering from heat stroke?

Were you uncomfortably hot in the car?
If you had the AC on, keeping it at a comfortable temperature , then their reaction is likely to be one of stress rather than heatstroke.

A piggy with heatstroke will be reluctant to eat, move and unable to stand steadily amongst other things.

it was warm but i wasn’t really uncomfortable, they are both now walking around and eating hay after i tried to wipe them with a damp bit of fleece (both ran away from me) is this a good sign?

I would think they were both just upset about being at the vet rather than it being heatstroke

Piggies with actual heatstroke are visibly poorly

thankyou.. my anxiety is really really high at the moment and this heat is really making me worry about everything, i honestly don’t know what to do

Hi

If the A/C was on and you were comfortable, then it is much more likely to be stress.

Please always allow the hot air in a car to be flushed out for a few minutes before putting your piggies into a warm vehicle (including a hatchback door). That makes a big difference for them in order to cover the interval until the A/C can kick in. Keep in mind that it won't be as strong and fast if your piggies are on the back seat.

If your piggies are up and running into their hideys as soon as they are back home and will tuck into a treat straight away, then it is definitely not heatstroke. Those piggies are noticeably ill.

thankyou so much for the reassurance. i am not in a good place with my mental health and my mind is causing me to worry about everything. i apologise for the un-needed post, i am truly sorry

Unless pigs are regular visitors to and from the vet (and they're getting well trained - poor you) they don't really understand what's happening or where they might be going next. They only know they're not at home and that can make them stressed. Old George used to get a little mixed salad on his return trips. By the end he was such a regular that he knew if he was in the box and I gave him his salad he was safe to relax and he'd just sit there scoffing it.

thankyou! bless him x

I have a special sing-song 'Are we going back home now' for my piggies which I always use as soon as the examination is over. More regular vet piggies learn to pick up on it and know when the ordeal is over. It helps to minimise the stress le vel on the way back; especially on a longer trip to Northampton.
