Hi everyone!
My pigs are very healthy at the moment but I was wondering if there was any worries how much would a check up cost?
Thank you!

It depends entirely on the rates at the vet practice you are registered with.
Mine charge around £35 for one consultation with any medications etc on top.

Prices vary quite a lot, depending on what type of vet you are seeing. You have to ring up the clinic and ask.

My vets charge £20 for a check up it’s the medications I find to be expensive.
We also paid £380 for an emergency appt and x ray! It’s good to have a fund saved up for those emergencies!

My vets charge £35 for initial consultation. Recurring consultations are normally a tad cheaper. Meds normally bump up the price. Basil needed antibiotics so the the total cost was about £65.

Its best to save any spare money if you have it into a vet fund. This means that if there is an emergency and it's near payday (always is!) you can afford to take your piggy to the vet. If your vet fund is looking very healthy then that's good because you can guarantee that within a few weeks it won't!

I feel like it depends as I’m registered under two (one out of hours and my normal) and the out of hours is definitely more expensive. My normal vets charge around £35 for a consultation and whatever is needed after. Thankfully there is one exotic vet at my normal practice but overall they’re good.

If you want to go to an exotic specialist, I can say from experience as we had to take our budgie (who sadly passed away last year) to one due to a tumour and we payed £90 for the referral from our vets and each consultation we had was around £45 and that’s without the medication.

I would always say try to have some money saved up if you can as if your piggies always seem to catch you off guard like ours then it helps. If you can’t afford exotic veg prices then I wouldn’t worry as doing what you can is better than doing nothing. It may be different for everyone but my local practice has always been good when I’ve gone.

Hopefully that helps!

It really does vary from vets to vets. Mine charge £26 for a small animal consultation with any medication extra.

I agree about having a vet fund. I have one myself and wouldn’t be without it

Ours is a specialist exotics vet and costs about £50 per consultation. I've just had to spend nearly £750 on one of my guinea pigs who isn't quite 1 year old yet but has an appalling respiratory tract infection that just won't clear. They wanted to do CT scan on him but that would have cost another almost £1000 which I can't afford. It's quite astonishing how quickly one sick guinea pig can wipe out money! He hasn't even recovered yet. I have dogs too and guinea pig vet treatment always seems so much more expensive and much harder to find a decent vet.
I would say don't waste your money seeing anyone who isn't an exotics specialist- I've found they never give great advice or treatment then you just have to get an appointment with a specialist anyway.
Hope your guinea pigs stay happy and healthy. 😊

Bills can vary from vet to vet, but none are cheap.
As @rp1993 said, it’s the medication that can be expensive.
Phoebe has just cost me another £80 for meds, a second lot.
Adding in visits and x-rays my little beauty has set me back over £400 in the past 2 weeks and we’re not done yet.
Save every penny you can for a vet fund and hope it’s never needed.

I've paid as little as $75 for an appointment scheduled during regular office hours to over $1,000 for a weekend hospital stay following an emergency vet appointment. Best to save up money in advance.

Hi everyone who helped me with this! I have found a perfect vet to take my girls to! Do they need regular check ups and if so how often, or is it just a matter of taking them if a problems occur?
Thank you!

I try to take mine for an annual health check at the vets.
Then, if required, we go to deal with any health issues that arise.

My piggies have a health check every 8 weeks when we take them for nail trims. I then take them if any health issues arise buf I would say that a general health check once per year should be sufficient
