I am long term fostering a mini lop house rabbit and in the next two days he has to undergo a general anaesthetic as the left-hand side of his face has suddenly swollen up, from under his eye to under his chin. The vet has said it could be an abscess, insect bite or dental, but he is very sorry for himself. I feel so helpless as I am still giving one of my piggies thyroid medication and anti-inflamatory meds. Plus, I am becoming a bit worried that another one of my piggies is developing something :(

Healing vibes would be welcome.

Lots of positive thoughts to you. Make sure you take care of yourself as well as those squeaky wheekies 💜

I am so sorry but you are doing a great job caring for everyone.
Bunnies (like piggies) can develop dramatic looking abscesses overnight. Hopefully it is something simple that can be easily and successfully treated.

I managed to get bunny an appointment at the vets this morning. He has a spur on a back tooth one side and 2 teeth curling over towards his gums on the other. The vet couldn't say for certain that there's an abscess but it could be an infection starting up in the bone. I was horrified to learn that to find that out would mean an xray costing £400 :(( I have booked him in for dental work under a ga on Friday and will take it all one step at a time. I have also found out how difficult it is to get meds into a bunny who hates any form of handling. I ended up wearing most of his painkiller meds this morning.!
Fingers crossed that all goes well on Friday

Aw. Fingers firmly crossed for Friday 🤞🏻

I lost my mini lop bun last year to a dental abscess. She was also a nightmare to get meds into. Wrapping her in a towel definitely made it alot easier xx

Several years ago my Nethie had a huge abscess on her jaw, it came up so suddenly.

She had an op to drain it with antibiotic beads placed into the cavity. She made a full recovery.

x

Sending healing vibes fokpr your poor bunny, hope he recovers very soon. Simon Maddock is very good with bunnies too when it comes to dentals x

Just seen this. Sending you and the bun healing vibes. And I remember just how difficult it could be wrestling with my old bun when it came to administering meds to her.

You are doing an amazing job. They do like to worry us and keep us on our toes don’t they. Sending healing vibes. Take care of yourself too ❤️

Bunny update. He went to have dental work under anaesthetic today and she said every tooth had a spur on it. When I brought him home the poor rabbit walked as if he had had one too many at the pub. Joking aside, he is not doing well. I have had to mush some rabbit pellets with water and syringe feed him as he isn't interested in eating or drinking and I was told he must be seen to eat drink and poo tonight. Fingers crossed he will eat something soon.

I hope he starts eating once the GA wears off 🤞

Sadly he is no better today. I've put him on critical care but I end up with most of it all over me and I feel very guilty trying to force his mouth open to get the syringe into his mouth. He has no interest in eating at all so I've no choice but to take him back to the vet tomorrow. It seems to be one problem after another right now, I am a bit downhearted I think :(

Aww I’m sorry to read this. You’ve had a rough time recently. It’s so wearing caring for ill animals. I hope bun perks up ASAP. It always took mine a while to want to eat after a dental. My elderly boy would only eat dill for a while at first. Take care x

You are doing all you can. Hopefully he will perk up very soon. Maybe give it a few days for the effects of the GA to subside. Have they been given pain killers? Or maybe they need stronger ones? Definitely speak to the vet tomorrow. Good luck you’re doing a great job.
