I was originally keeping hay in feeders but now started throwing more piles on the ground. I'm using Timothy hay tho as I heard it's healthier and I got a huge box. It's kinda pokey. Will this be safe for them to burrow in until I use up the 9 pound box or do I need softer hay

If it sits flat it’s fine.
Timothy hay isn’t very good for bedding/burrowing into due to it being too coarse. Softer meadow hay is really good for burrowing into.
I fill my hutches with soft meadow hay and then put timothy hay in a pile for them to eat

They should be fine. Mine dive (literally) into piles of Timothy hay no problem. 😄
