Hello all,

I repurposed an old wooden toddlers truck for Harry and Lloyd to eat their hay out of, which they love. However, one of them (I'm 90% sure it is Harry, keeps sitting in it and pooping).

I clean the poop out twice a day and refill it with fresh hay too, but what I want to know is, will my piggies shun the hay as soon as their cage mate has done his business on it?

I don't want them missing out on their hay in between the time I clean it out each day because Harry (or his brother) have done their filthy business in it :hmm:. Does that make sense?

Thought?

I see what you mean! And that's such a cute hay tray :D

It might be possible to litter train your guinea pigs somewhat? I didn't think I'd be able to do it, but I managed to litter train my boy and two girls. I'd set them out for floor time and see where they go to the toilet most and then put newspaper or possibly puppy pads (provided they don't chew them, so I'd just go for newspaper for the moment depending on how much they chew) down on the various spots they go most. You could also do that in their cage as well, but not under the houses as sitting in wee may give them urine scold. It worked for me and they barely go anywhere but on newspaper anymore. It might be worth testing it out if you have the time. Also, I wouldn't start off using a litter tray as that might take away their motivation to do it there as it did with my piggies for some reason.

As for an immediate (temporary?) solution, they won't usually shun the hay if there's poop in it, so I wouldn't worry. If they wee in it, I'm not sure what to do other than the above or using a hay rack :))

My boys couldn't care less if the other has pee'd or pooped in it lol.
I would have thought most if not all piggies will just carry on as normal.mi could be wrong as I'm no expert!
