I have just made some 2x4 C&C cages but before putting my piggies in them I wanted to figure out where/how to get/make a hay/poop tray. I have lots of correx left over so I could make something out of that but was wondering if it would just get knocked over all the time since it would not have much any weight and a clumsy piggy is likely to tip it over or drag it away with them. I am going to have the hay stuffed in one of those wire ball things and hung above any tray. I'm guessing that I would need to use substrate (Megazorb) in this tray since I know they like to poop where they eat. I have fleece liners for the cage already.

Any suggestions or recommendations for this would be appreciated as I really want to get my piggies in their new cages ASAP!

This is what I made, it's basically a small cage inside the main c&c. It can be lined with anything you wish.

Oh cool. I am aware that hay is a nightmare to clean off fleece so was thinking I may have to use substrate in any hay section. I may just create a correx box and secure it to the outer correx with velcro tape.

Usually litter trays/bowls are pretty sturdy, and don't require sticking to the main cage :)
As this little section of the cage is only small I find it only requires little effort to shake off the hay during cleaning time, using a good stiff brush from poundland lol.

I think @Kerrie74 has a good idea lowering the sides, like cutting a little 'doorway' so no hay can escape the rest of the tray either.

Lol the problem with ours was.. I put puppy pads in covered with fleece because I was hoping when they ate the hay they would poo and pee in the tray as well, what actually happened was... they went to sleep in the tray lol.

I use a large cat litter tray. But you could use a under bed storage box (if the sides are to high for piggies to jump over you can cut an entrance and file/sandpaper the edges to make sure they are not sharp) you could also use large seed trays.

In my DIY wood and Perspex cage I use a cat litter tray and shavings which is sectioned from the fleece off by a strip of wood they can jump over. The other, my 2x4 c&c I used left over correx and made a correx tray to fit 1x2 which slots in nicely so can't move anywhere and cut out a dipped bit for them to jump in, to be honest they just walk over it, it's not that high :)

I might steal some of these ideas myself :))

I'm currently using a purple medium cat litter tray from P@H, can't remember the price. It was fairly expensive for a plastic one, but it works well for me. Most hay doesn't leave the tray and only one or two strands need picking up every so often. It depends on the cage layout sometimes as well. I don't find hay on fleece too much of a problem. If it gets annoying, I flap the fleece about wildly in my garden and hope it comes off (which it usually does). Annoying little bits of hay also come off in the washing machine and don't have any problem with clogging etc.
edit; here's a picture of it. iPad camera is a little fuzzy right now though :)

Well I just made something out of correx but I think it might be a little big as it takes up 1x2 of the cage. I will look at finding something smaller and see how that works out.

I am using Megazorb in it until I finish the bag I have of which I am finding comes out onto the fleece and is not the easiest to hoover up but it's better than pooping mostly on the fleece.

My piggies have managed to poop mostly in the hay section and I don't have too much to hoover up everyday.

The correx boxes were temporary and lo and behold, the piggies started nibbling and destroying them where I had not put the spine binders so the bedding was just going all over the fleece.

As a permanent solution I got these: Dark Green 52cm Grow Tray - without Holes

..but found them too large so ended up with these: Premium Gravel Tray without Holes

..which work perfect, were a 1/3 of the price of the other and give the piggies more space to run around in! :bronco:
