In the piggie shed it's currently lino and loooooads of hay

Seriously considering changing to vetbed...

Your thoughts?

How much would I need?

Washing and drying?

Thanks!

I think great idea! I use vet bed with towels under. It needs to be changed every three days.

Mine love their vetbed, they have that with fleece/blanket underneath with piles of hay on top. Very cosy. Washes well just brush or shake before it goes in the machine dries quite quickly.

Personally I wouldn't fancy brushing off and washing a whole shed of vet bed and towels/mattress protector etc. every three days! I'm guessing you'd need to do three loads of washing each time which is probably not so economical (you'd need to wash at 60C or use a sterilising agent to kill bacteria), initial cost is pretty expensive also. I've also heard that the constant washing means it's pretty worn out after a year but that may depend on which you buy.

You could always try it out in one area of the shed to see if it suits you and have a vet bed section and a hay section so the piggies get the best of both.

That said, I would think using hay alone is pretty high maintenance as it's not particularly absorbent and tends to go horrible pretty quickly once wet, I'd be inclined to put something underneath it.

What are your motivations for changing?

I didnt need to wash my vet bed daily in my 6x2 with 3 piggies in, it was fine after a week but it is high maintenance keeping up either vet bed or fleece. An absorbent bedding under the hay might be less work. I did at some point work out that with only 2 pigs fleece wasnt the cheapest bedding once leccy, and fabric cleaner stuff was taken into account!

We use fleece with newspapers underneath. We do a load of them in the washing machine every week and always put plenty of hay on top.

Mine currently have lino, a layer of megazorb and hay. I tried for a while with the vet bed and fleece but it was far too much upkeep for me.
