I noticed Bruno’s eye was clouded and cling filmy. Got him straight to the emergency vet and he had hay stuck in it, looks so painful my poor boy :( I have eye drops to give him for a week and then to follow up next week. She said it has a good chance of healing but to keep an eye on it. Been a dreadful night for me, never had anything like this happen to my piggies before :(

Well done on realising he has hay poke and getting him seen so quickly. We had eye drops for Betty after a hay poke and they worked very well, she made a total recovery. It’s stressful but it sounds like you and the vets are very much on top of it.

Good that you have had him seen straight away - why do these things always happen on a week or a holiday?
Please keep giving him the eye drops. Has your vet also given you a lubricant?

If not, try to get some carbomer based plain tear gel (easier to get in than drops and longer lasting in effect); you can order it online or get it from a pharmacy. It helps with the hydration of eye, general comfort and speeding up the healing process as it penetrates deeper into the eye than the antibiotic eye drops.

The sooner you can step in with medication the quicker and more straight forward the healing process will be. All the best!

Yeppp late at night on the holiday! You can’t make it up :( she only gave me some antibiotic eye drops to be used 4x a day for a week. Will have a look for the tear gel thank you. It’s feeling like the end of the world for me at the moment because it’s my first to around with a poorly eye and it looks so painful bless him. Very glad I have this wonderful forum x

Thank you for your lovely response ❤️ I’m super glad Betty made a full recovery! It is very stressful :( I’m hoping for a smooth recovery for my baby too, I say smooth as I know I’m going to be bitten and clawed 4x a day lol :) x

Oh no he have must have been talking to some of my girls! They love to get hay in their eyes on a weekly basis! Emily had a grass seed in her eye 2 days in a row last week   And Maude had one the day before.. and both of them many times before.
Hope he makes a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

Awwww no! Silly girlies! Twice in a row, not sure if I’m horrified or impressed at Emily’s determination there! Hope your girlies have recovered well, thank you for the get well wishes ❤️ x

Ouch. That does look sore. Excellent that the vet could sort it out for him. Hope Bruno is a good patient for you.

Does anyone have any tips for doing this please? Just given him his first one after ages of messing around and frustrations :( he is very uncooperative x

Is it just you or do you have somebody who can help you?
If you have someone who can hold him then it can help. You can then use one hand to gently pull down the bottom eyelid and the other hand to drop the drops in.

I have always had to do it alone (hubby won’t get involved with the piggies!), and I’ve tended to have to get my whole body involved! Holding piggy on my legs (legs slightly bent), forearms holding piggy in position and stopping him from moving. Left hand (I’m right handed) holding piggy’s head and gently holding eyelid and the other hand to put drops in. Not easy but it’s worked and was much quicker as we weren’t fighting each other

Mum is helping me put them in but between us we’re struggling! We have about a 2 minute window before he starts chomping whoever is holding him. Then there’s the “has it gone in?” Phase, lol I guess this should’ve been expected as it’s the first time but lack of sleep and a very uncooperative Bruno makes for a very stressful time. I didn’t even think about holding his eyelid, it’s probably a lot easier than what I was doing to be honest! Thank you x

Just really gently pull it downwards so it catches the drop, so when you let go, you know at least some of it made contact.
My Dexter used to be like that - would nip a finger in protest. Trying keeping his mouth occupied with a yummy something may buy you a little extra time. If he is anything like Dex though, you still need to be pretty quick. I used coriander bribes during his last hair cut, he had about four sprigs before he realised what I was up to!

Poor piggy and poor you, what a pain on a holiday weekend.
I put mine on my lap to do it. I'm right handed so I sit them across my lap, left arm round piggy holding him against me. That way I can open eye with left hand. Real wrigglers get wrapped in a towel. When you've done it a few times you will find a way that is simple for you.

Drops are really tricky. Aim for the inside corner and just hope for the best. We have had drops and ointment and the ointment was so much easier.

It looks so sore but they seem to cope with it far more stoically than we would!

Poor Bruno, hope his eye heals up very soon. Things like this always happen on a Bank Holiday doesn’t it 🙄

Thank you for the get well messages everyone! Sorry for just dropping off the thread. Been exhausted honestly! Trying to cope with my gastritis only getting worse and Bruno’s eye drops too. His eye is looking a lot better already and he just lets me do it now thankfully! x
