I have been on a real hay run around tonight.
My mum bought me a large bag of hay, she's moved to a rural area recently and was pleased a local shop sells local hay and cheap for lots.... (Yes for a reason!) So she bought us a large bag and told me it looks really good stuff and smells fresh!
I am very grateful that she thinks about me and the boys.
But tonight after a long day at work and work out I decided to clean the boys out it was 10:30pm and I got the bag out of the boot to find it stinky and yucky and not in anyway usable!
I usually am very picky about the hay I get and in no way could I use this stuff.
I had no other hay as I put off getting any as I had this big bag coming.
I had just had a late night trip to Asda praying they had hay in stock, they did but it was packed in the back and after being the weirdo shopping for hay late at night I had to try and smell the bags with out them seeing me! What have guinea pigs done to me!?

I know I am a hay snob and I have to inspect bags carefully when I get them. I hate wasting money on bad hay!

I'd be disgusted, thank god I'm able to pick up any bag of hay and my piggies eat it, mostly the multifit hay is what the eat, and i can get that anyday in the pet-shop, Its surprising it stays dry in the shed, sometimes the tiniest bit of dampness can get through, luckily not this winter though.

Maybe store some hay that the piggies like in a brown bag in a dry place? I hear that keeps alot of stuff fresh longer, so perhaps it could work for hay.

That top picture is about what meadow hay looks like over here, the piggies seem to like it though. So jealous of the beautiful green meadow hay they get in the UK and the farms usually only sell alfalfa/lucerne hay here.

It doesn't look bad but it smelt so bad and was sticky to touch it must have been damp when they bagged it and it's gone moldy. I find we can get some really bad hay here in the uk, I've had some bags that have had thorns in and hard sticks but I try and check the bags carefully to avoid bad batches

True, I bought some to try from the pets side of Poundstretcher once - never again. Took weeks to get the splinters out of my hand. Straight in the bin, never went near the pigs! This was when I was ignorant enough to think that hay was hay, before I knew that as with everything you get what you pay for.
