So I just bought a wooden hay rack but the openings are very narrow and I'm afraid the hay won't stick out well enough for my future boys coming in a week or two. I've heard the idea of using a storage cube as a hay rack (the 14x14 size) Does this work well in holding the hay up? Is it messy? What do you hook it on your cage with - possibly cable ties? Thanks in advance for the replies :)

I just have my hay in a pile on the floor. They love to play in it. It is not mess to them. They like to graze on it all day long so it is nice to have it were they like.

Mine dont use a hayrack either. They use to pull it out all over the floor, so we started giving it to them like that. Mine like to lie in it and eat it at the same time.

Well, I was wondering if a hay rack would be a good alternative because it seemed that once they had eaten the top layer of hay (that lay on the bedding), they wouldn't even touch the remaining until I restocked the hay.

if they use the hay rack go for it. I give mine a big mountain of fresh hay everyday

some piggies use them, some dont. See what works best for yours :)

i use a hayrack for my pig because she was pooping in her hay and then not eating it :p she still picks through it but i save a lot more with the rack! you can always watch your piggies carefully to make sure they can eat out of theirs! good luck!

I want to get a hay rack because of the mess of the hay on fleece but I compensated with a small cat litter tray, does the job! They pee and poop in there too which is both a bonus and bummer. A bonus because there's not a huge amount of poop and pee in the cage but the downside is that I have to clean that tray out once a day or every other day.

xx

This is the hay rack I use.

It works just fine, and occasionally Salvatore will eat all the hay in it, and it holds a lot. I just put the hay in a little pile over by the pellets for Redemption, and that works OK as he doesn't eat much hay anyway. But anything to hold the hay up would be OK. I've even seen boxes attached to the outside of the cage, letting the cage bars be the slots that the hay feeds through.

i use these ones too! :)

I have two of those hay racks too but for the herd I worried there wouldnt be enough hay in there for them. I ended up putting in a panel (as the pen was made up of puppy panels) at an angle in the corner and they had a huge hay rack.

For the boys as most of my grids were solid plastic sided it made it difficult to use a grid or other types of hay racks - the two I had are for the herd so they wont be using something the girls had. But I found an under shelf rack for a fiver in the range store over here in the uk (was looking at bathroom shelving/kitchen drainers etc for mesh type things I could tie on to make a hay rack) and it does the job and also holds the water bottle

I use these under shelf thingys too. Also with the water bottle in. I got them from Home and Bargains for £1.99 each. They still have them in stock. I will post a photo later.
