Hi! it’s very expensive for us to keep going to the vet as this comes and goes quite alot and we’ve been 3 times for various reasons recently and she’s been fine each time so my parents don’t want to keep paying out but she’s got another ‘hay poke’ i think…. she gets them quite a lot but they come and go but this time it looks bigger but we literally went last week to the vets for another reason and she was fine, any advice ?

Hi!

It looks rather like a conjunctivitis to me which should be treated with antibiotic eye drops (they are prescription only in the UK) because the lining between the eyeball and the the face is swollen but not injured looking, as far as I can make out from the fuzzy picture. This is unfortunately a real issue that should be seen by a vet.

Hay or eye pokes are when a piece of hay pierces the eyeball (or at least the chamber in front of the lens), which can lead to an infection and which needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible; eye injuries deteriorate very quickly but heal fairly straight forward if treated promptly.

Unfortunately, there are no cheap and easy pets. Vet bills are by far the biggest budget post in any pet's life time outlay. Since vet cost are not paid for by tax money, they are much higher than what we have to pay with the NHS for our own treatment directly and can come as a nasty shock.

:agr: It does look sore. I'd get it checked as eyes can deteriorate very quickly.
