hello :D

I was looking at some stories about hay poke and I was just wondering....

What is hay poke?

What do I do if my pig has it?

How do I prevent it?

Thanks :D

A hay poke is basically when a guinea pig gets an eye injury from a piece of hay. It can be a scratch, or a piece of hay stuck in the eye.

Will try and find some links with more info

You would usually know if your piggy has one because their eye won't look 'normal'.
It might be wet around the eye, crusty, weeping, look opaque, etc. or your piggy might be blinking a lot, or pawing at their eye.
Basically if things don't look quite right with their eye, get them to a vet asap, as early treatment is the key (and also much simpler and cheaper than leaving things to worsen).

I had a guinea that had this, the eye suddenly looked like he was blind or had a cataract, went straight to my vets (who are exotics specialists) who put numbing drops in so he didn't feel anything and then drops to show it up befirs successfully removing a shard if hat, he then had antibiotics and made a full recovery, went on to live to almost 8 years old! From Toraks mummy!
