Hi last Saturday I notice something was wrong with piggys eye so went to the vets Monday morning. He put dye in her eye which came up green shower a deep ulcer. He flushed the eye but couldn't see anything. He said she could of got some hat in her eye. She has got 2 lots of eye drops to use 3/4 times a day and oral meds twice a day. The day after a piece of sawdust was stuck to the top of her eye. She has got another follow up appointment tomorrow afternoon. Just wanted to know if anyone elses pigs eye has looked like this?

Hello and welcome to the forum. What a beautiful face she has! Most of us have some experience of hay poke. I was extremely lucky that Sir George got his only one (so far!) on the way to the vet, so it didn't have a chance to do any damage. I know that other people have more experience dealing with bad eye injuries and, to my knowledge, eyes can heal amazingly well.

I’m glad your piggy had another appointment booked, as that looks to be a particularly nasty injury.

Let us know how tomorrow’s appointment goes. I hope she is ok

Thank you 😊 she is OK apart from the eye and still running out for veg and hay.

Ooh that does look sore! Glad your vet is keeping on top of it. My piggie Tofu has had four hay pokes, one looked similar to yours, and he now has a permanent eye condition also. He copes just fine so it is treatable with the right care. Lubricant eye drops and a painkiller have been key for him, as well as antibiotic drops for an active ulcer - though I’m by no means an expert

Hope the meds get her feeling better soon

Hi
The pic on the left was last night and the one on the right was this morning. Does this look like part of the healing process?

I’m not an expert, but when my piggie Tofu had a red hay poke like that, it did look similar while it was healing. Hers does look quite severe, poor thing

It took about 3-4 days for all the red to go away once Tofu got onto stronger eye drops, 8 days total for the ulcer to heal. He now has a permanent condition in the same eye but it’s very manageable for him - I was back and forth to the vet a lot at the time though!

Sending well wishes for her and you

This was my Tofu’s eye at its worst for context

Thank you. Poor piggy it does look similar to Summers.

I think it does look healthier from the other photo, keep going you are doing a great job there. Eyes can simet8mes take quite some time to heal

Hi another update. The eye has changed again. Anyone got any idea what this could mean?

Please see a vet as soon as you possibly can, it looks rather worse to me from the last photo 🤞

I have to agree - it does look worse and she needs to be seen by a vet asap

Going to phone the vet in the morning and try and get an appointment. It looks like its sunk in a bit. 🤞she doesn't need the eye out.

Hey! My little guy had the same problem, I took him to the vet, and they said I had two options. I could let them sew they hole in eye together, or they could remove the eye all together. I chose neither, and took him to a different vet.

So long story short, the vet took him home with her and watcher him, eventually, a layer of his eye fell off (this was a good thing, it meant that it was healing) and they gave him oral ani-biotics, pain meds, and eye drops.

So, it will look a lot worse than before it gets better. your piggy will be in my prayers! good luck to you and your piggy!

Thank you. The vets still waiting for swab results to come back that she had done last week. It should be back later today and asked me to send an updated pic of the eye. Just waiting for them to get back after they've looked at the pic.

I had a similar issue with one of mine, where i think he must have run into the water bottle spout
I persuaded the vet to change from Chloramphenical drops to fucidin ointment ( fucithalmic) and he changed the antibiotic too and his eye did heal. The chloramphenical seemed to make his eye worse and to be honest I thought his eyeball was going to pop but the fucidin did the trick so hope it works for you

I can't remember which antibiotics my boy was on but if your vet has taken swabs he should be able to prescribe the appropriate antibiotic, but certainly worth trying the other ointment

Hope there’s some good news soon.
The waiting can be tough

Vet has got the swab results and said she is on the correct antibiotics and from the pictures I sent him he said the eye looks a little better. But the red looks like conjunctivitis said to carry on with the oral meds and the antibiotic eye drops and cornea repair gel and bring her back in for another dye test.

That sounds hopeful! You’re doing a great job, getting eye drops into them is never easy

Glad your vet is keeping a close watch. She’s on all the meds that helped my piggie with his eye. Sending well wishes

Glad your vet is on the ball.
You are doing a great job.
Look after yourself too as caring for a sick piggy is exhausting

We’ve had 3 hay pokes in total so completely empathise. One of our girls had two in one eye within a year and her sight has been affected, but she’s recovered just fine. Hope your girl gets better soon!
