Hello! I have had my piggies for a month now and for last 2 weeks i swapped from shavings to fleece. They have a big layer of newspaper then a lovely soft fleece, in the sleeping area they then have a mountain of hay! I am having a nightmare getting the hay off the fleece! Do they need a stack of hay to bed down in? Is there something else I could be using? They have a hay rack so they have plenty to munch on all day.
Thankyou x

I have a hay rack and also fill a cat litter tray with hay so they can lie in it and munch if they want .... they do pee in it too so it gets changed twice a day. It helps keep the hay off the fleece. I also have little beds and things for them to lie in if they want although some just chill out on the fleece.

Mine are in an outside hutch, so in the covered area meant to be a nesting/bedding area what should i put in there? newspaperrs then fleece then? little cozies? I love the litter hay tray idea!x

they should always have a ready supply of hay, it is vital to their digestive system, so it doesn't matter where you put it as long as they have lots of it.

I just wasnt sure what i should put for them to sleep in if i was puttinng the hay else where! I like the thought of them being all snuggled up at night! Will have to try and make something! Do they need something over them like we sleep with a blanket over us! That sounds like such a silly quesstion!

I've made little bottomless houses and tents for mine (padded and warm ). I find I don't have to wash them all the time if there's no bottom to be wee'd and poo'd on. They all pick a tent/house at night and snuggle themselves off to sleep staying nice and toasty with dry bums ( at the mo I have Megazorb and hay under them) . I've made sure the houses/tents outer material is non-sticky material so nothing sticks to it.

Vetbed is good for keeping them toasty too. It has a much thicker pile than fleece and holds heat much better :)

I'll second that request ...how can i make a bed tent? Do you have instructions or a pattern?

I've used that same setup too and it works a treat.

I make things up as I go a long...it's all rather random! My Mom gave me a padded pet carrier ( cat or small dog size ) that she didn't want, I cut it in half ( took the zip off and hemmed the edge ) put binding round the edges which gave a helmet type shape and sat up nice and sturdiliy, I added a bit of padded fabric to the fronts where it was open at the top ( also put ties on the back to hold them in a corner so they can't be shoved over! ). Tents : I used a thick fleece as the filling, just made a cover with a shiny fabric, sewed the fleece into it and ran the machine over it in a few places ( like a quilt ) to keep the fleece sheet inside from sliding around then added ties along the middle which I hooked/tied ( in the bottom piggie house it's hooked onto shower curtain rings, in the top one tied across a corner ) to the cage. The tent just hangs down ( a bit like the sort we'd make as kids over our Mum's washing line) and I stuff some hay under it - piggies have no trouble finding their way in and out. :)
Does that make sense or have I just rambled on? 8:)

I see! I have a hutch so I think i will need to install some hooks to make a tent/den! Thank you for sharing your ideas with me! *** you use hamster type bedding, shredded paper thats edible do you think? x

I use Megazorb at the mo, it's a horse bedding made from wood pulp and very absorbent ( I order it from our local equestrain supplier ) but I will be moving to fleece in the next week or so and then just using Megazorb in the hay box and litter tray. If you're going to use litter then Megazorb is quite good but now that I've fot 4 piggies and 2 C & C cages I do seem to be using rather a lot ( although not as much as if they were on shavings ) Equiflax is another litter that's supposed to go a lot further than megazorb so I'll be trying to get some of that for the litter trays next time.
