Hay or Grass?

Am learning so much since joining here a week ago! Everyone says that guineas should have unlimited hay. Mine live in a two storey 4 x 2 hutch with an attached run, so have constant day time access to grass. Do they need hay in addition to this? Sorry if it is a silly question - as hay is dried grass - but is there any difference for them or is that recommendation for indoor / shed kept guineas? They also get fresh veg daily and dried feed. Any advice welcome. Thanks.
 
Hay is needed constantly for the gut and also it helps to keep teeth nice and trim. Grass is good and I give all pigs a portion a day but Hay should be available at all times too. :)
 
Thanks. So if mine are outside on the lawn in the day then they only need hay, veggies and hay? The won't need any of the dried grasses people talk about on here?
 
They don't NEED them but they will certainly benefit from the variety O0 As the year progresses there is less nutritional value in the grass so during the later months it's definately worth introducing other grasses and hays. O0
 
I feed mine hay every day ... I put it in their bedroom at night to tuck them up and also in a hay-rack attached to the mesh of the hutch at tea-time.

Usually all the hay is gone by morning. It keeps them occupied and is vital to their digestion. Get a supply of good, nice and soft hay, not dry or dusty though.

Unlimited hay ... that is what I say!
 
Yes all of mine have hay put in there bed at night and then in the other bit of hutch to eat

Thanks everyone. I would guestimate that our piggies have had hay 85-90% of the time (we have had them approx 4years). Occasionally when we have run out there has been a short time when they've not had any as I didn't realise it was essential for them. Is this likely to have caused them any long term problems I should be aware of?
