Hi,

My sisters Guinea pig has a lot of hay mites in his hair, he was rescued from pets at home and we think he got them from there. I have a long haired Guinea pig that I treated for hay mites and his have all gone, my sister used the same treatment on hers (washed him, used Johnson’s spray and parasite spot treatment) but the mites now look a lot more visible in Spud’s hair. Could this just be that they’ve been brought to the surface and need brushing out or is further treatment needed? Would you recommend a vet visit as well?

Photo added for reference - they seem to be around this area, the ones under his chin have gone luckily
We’re New Guinea pig owners so thanks for any advice :)

Please see a vet for the correct prescription strength mite treatment.
The correct treatment needs to be based on the piggy’s weight, be at a high enough concentration and given at the correct interval between the three separate doses to kill the full life cycle of the mites effectively.

Using such off the shelf pet shop parasite products such as the johnsons one is not recommended. They are not high enough dosage to cure an active infestation (pet shops cannot sell medications). Such products may temporarily suppress if but will not cure it and they can also lead to resistance forming, making treatment much harder.

You will also need to clean the cage thoroughly ideally with a vet grade cleaner called F10.
