I picked peanut up for some lap time, when we noticed that he has some hay stuck in his eye. It’s very small and it’s clearly making him uncomfortable. We’ve heard that you shouldn’t take hay out on your own so we will probably see the vet about it. How urgent is it (is it an emergency) and is there anything we can do to make him more comfortable?

Hay poke injuries are unfortunately always very high priority and ideally need to be seen within 24 hours. The only upside is that it doesn't need a specialist vet.

Hi

Can you please clarify: Is the hay stuck under a lid and could be scratching the surface or has it penetrated into the eye? The first can wait until first thing tomorrow morning (please ring up right when the clinic opens). he second should be ideally seen promptly as our piggy could make it worse with scratching; especially with a harder stalk. Any fresh bleeding in the eye makes it an any time of the day or night emergency.

Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly. The good news is that eye diagnosis, treatment and medication is the same as for cats and dogs, so any decent general vet will do. Stepping in quickly come before qualification when it comes to eyes.

All the best.

It’s stuck under the lower lid

In this case, it can wait until tomorrow morning. Most vets have one or two emergency slots reserved so you can hopefully be seen before the bank holiday when you give them a call first thing. The eye surface should be checked for scratches that could ulcerate (get infection and develop infectious gunk) even if the hay is coming out.

Just to check, Vets for Sutton is a normal vet as well as an emergency vet right. We saw Anne Nelson Vets on the list but on their website they mentioned Vets for Sutton, which is much closer to home so we were thinking of bringing him there.
