Hi everyone!

I've had my two boys for nearly a month now and I've already gone through 2 packs of the alfalfa king Timothy hay from pets @ home as well as a cheaper Timothy hay so it's getting to be a bit costly lol. I've seen loads about hay for pets hay on here and I was also advised to buy from them from the rspca lady who organised my adoption. So I ordered some but I've noticed that it's quite stiff hay, looks more like the hay I feed my horses as opposed to the dark green soft hay I've bought from p@h, smells beautiful though! I seem to remember reading somewhere that the hay needs to be soft so it doesn't scratch their eyes or whatever so I'm wondering if this is ok? I ordered the Timothy and Rye hay as that was the only one I could see that was Timothy. Any advise is greatly appreciated! Hopefully I'm just being a paranoid piggy mum! :hmm:

From what I've heard timothy hay is more coarse so should be fed in a rack instead of a big pile to avoid hay pokes to the eyes. I use the ings hay from hay for pets as my boys love it, although I'm thinking of trying out their meadow hay next time as I think it might be softer again, the ings seems to be a hit and a miss, the last batch I had was great but this one's not so much. I may be really bad but I don't feed timothy hay because it was expensive and the boys never ate it - they much prefer meadow/ings hay!

I got some Meadow Hay from Hay for Pets and it's lovely and soft. My Piggies love it. I also got some INGS hay and I am finding quite a few "stick like" bits in it. I pick these bits out as my Piggies love the ING hay too but this batch is too course to be given anywhere but in a hay rack.

Thanks guys. I can't keep buying the little bags of Timothy for them, it's nearly £9 and they go through nearly one a week! Spoilt piggies! I've just put some of the new stuff in their hutch and they are going mad for it! Really chowing down! At least they're happy! I might get some meadow hay for their beds and hides and just put the tim in the racks.

I love watching them when I give them some fresh hay - they're an absolute delight to watch.

I got them a big straw tunnel as well and I've been watching them having fun for over an hour now! They are so adorable! Makes me so happy when they're happy!

I use the hay that I use for my horses. Then it only cost me £3 for enough to last me ages.

I just bought the Timothy and Rye hay (4.5kg) as my boys were like yours and were steaming through the Alfalfa king hay, which is pricey! I've heard really good things about this and it is so much cheaper then Alfalfa king :)

I have just finished a bag of Ings hay and found myself in a dilemma as the boys loved it but I found there was a fair amount of wastage between a lot of hard twigs that I needed to pick out to avoid hay poke and lots of tiny leafy bits. I went back to meadow hay that they don't like as much but do still eat and I have also got a sample of Timothy and Rye that they LOVE! I stuff a medium sized chube with this and they have a great time pulling it all out. Will definitely get a big bag of this.

My last order was Ings hay and Timothy and Rye.
I think they like both but now I haven't got room to store two big bags of hay. They'll have to make do with Timothy and Rye which they seem to like :)
As long as Maple can get into her hay bag she's happy regardless whats in it. And my OH met a lady who can give us bags of hay for bedding really cheap as well.

I use normal hay bales from horse supplies place and then give them timothy in racks they seem to like both as they eat both the hay rack hay and softer stuff but I like the timothy as its stiffer for their teeth

I found mine like the ings for bedding - they really didn't eat much of it.
Timothy and Rye hay is a favourite with mine also :)
