Hey guys

I'm planning to buy my hay in bulk, roughly 50 pounds at a time probably, as it is the cheapest way to get hay for me.

However, I'm wondering what type of hay to get. I want hay that I can use in my hay box for the guinea pigs regularly. Does this mean I can only use orchard grass hay, or would 3rd cut timothy hay work as well? I've been told that second cutting could cause a hay poke... Whatever I buy in bulk will be the hay that goes in the hay box and is used most often, but I can get small bags of timothy hay as well.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I can also buy 20 lbs of Timothy and 20 lbs of 3rd cut/orchard, but it will be 10 pounds less hay for the equivalent price of 50 pounds of Orchard/3rd Cut. If that's better for them though, I don't mind. I know they'll go through more of whatever is in the hay box though.

I get meadow hay for mine in a farm hay bale from the farm. I use it as bedding as well as eating hay. My 4 don't get anything else haywise and are very happy, healthy piggies living a thoroughly spoilt life.

Any type of grass hay is absolutely fine. What you give is up to you, and what your piggies will eat.

Each month I buy 15kg of meadow hay which is used for bedding, playing, eating and 5kg of Timothy hay purely for eating which goes in a hay rack to prevent eye injuries

Thank you all for your replies!

It looks like Orchard grass hay is pretty popular, so I'll probably stick with that. Thank you @Betsy and @Piggies&buns .

@Black piggies I had heard that 3rd cut timothy was much softer though? Which is why I was considering it with Orchard.

Yes I'm using both at the moment, so that sounds a good plan. Sorry not sure about third cut but any timothy I've had has been good to supplement meadow/orchard rather than just have timothy.

@Black piggies Can you tell me about how much Timothy vs. Orchard hay you use in a month for your pigs?

Since hay is so important to the guineas, it's what I'm putting a good chunk of money towards. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy a good amount of bulk orchard, and then either timothy hay or oat hay? I'm feeling like Orchard, plus Oat for in the hay bag, so then I can get some timothy hay cubes for "treats".

I get the feeling I'm definitely overthinking this. I'm so indecisive... :))

I'm getting my hay from Small Pet Select, for the record.
