In P&H they have a pack of 5 or 6 hay disks that is pressed together. This is good to give to guinea pigs? I think it would keep neat in the cage and not sprinkled everywhere and i think it would be a good bordem breaker too because they can spend there time trying to tear the hay from the block. Has anyone used these before? I've seen them in P&H for some time now and always thought they looked nice but never get round to buying them incase they are not really a good idea.

Also, yesterday i brought my piggy's a small bag of timothy hay. Guinea pigs are allowed timothy hay too right? but I read the information on the pack and it was stating about feeding guide for rabbits, it didn't mention anything about guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are still allowed timothy hay even if it states rabbits on the bag?

If you look under guinea pigs on the site that hay is under guinea pigs food as well hun.

lol, well adleast we know now hehe! I use the excel with dandelions. I generally just buy the greenest do need to try Oxbow though!

right ok, thats sorted LOL...now about the meadow hay disks, are they ok?

They are fine for guineas - I have used a few varieties of them.

They actually make more mess if you currently use fleece as they tend to drag them around and they shed all over the fleece.

However they are a great distraction for them and different.

The cookies are great fun mine get one every few days / every week. they enjoy tearing them apart but they do make more mess than regular hay as they have a habit of taking them into their beds instead of eating them nicely in the litter tray!

I'm sorry to tell you that you have wasted your money on the Pets at Home timothy hay. Any nutritional information you read online on Timothy hay applies to higher quality timothy which is green -- P@H's version is very much not great, extremely stalky and when I rarely bought it in the past it smelt musty.

Timothy hay should make up about 85% of your guinea pigs diet, though meadow hay is fine too, if you want to buy timothy which is worth giving to your pigs either aim for Alfalfa King's Timothy Hay (sold by pets at home)

the greener the hay is the higher the quality.

If you're serious about feeding timothy hay alone, or another grass hay such as Orchard Grass it'd be a good idea if you had a look at buying it in bulk online from Oxbow.

Teadragon ~ I agree the timothy hay from P&H is quite stalky but then I thought thats good, because the more longer and thick it is the better because it helps them grind down their teeth. And my pack doesn't smell musty.

Ok i'll check out the Afalafa King's timothy hay, when i next go to Pets at Home. Is it more expensive than the P&H timothy hay? i don't have much money so i don't want to spend loads, specially if it's a small bag...i'll have to buy it in a big bulk online or get my dad too and i'll pay him back because i do not have a debit card. :( thanks for your advice :)

everyone who replied to my hay cookie's question...cool, i'll have to buy some, and feed it along with loose hay. It'll keep my piggies busy.

i bought the cookies today for my pigs and they seem to love having one in their cage to eat and play tug of war with, and i like it that they are mess free :))

ah i can't edit my last post...uhm...so all i need to do is, buy the greenest timothy hay there is in P&H, teadragon? i don't think i've seen that alfalada kings timothy hay in my local store. But there is Excel herbage timothy hay and Supa Forage Excel Natural grass in there and on the P&H site. Next time, I'm in P&H i'll buy one of those instead? since they are greener varieties than the P&H timothy hay

Cookie - there's no point in you spending £3 or £4 on a small bag of low-grade hay; to be honest, many farmers wouldn't even give that grade of hay to their animals and I wouldn't either.

I'm not sure of the price of Alfalfa King's timothy hay, it'll probably be similar to that of the Timothy you got; it's in a red bag. The stalks do aid in the wearing of the teeth, but to be perfectly honest, if your guinea pig is eating hay there's no real need to wear the teeth more than they will be while eating a diet high in hay. What you want to happen is happening.

The greener, the higher the quality.

My piggies went balmy when I put the hay cookies in. Why? Because they had to work hard to get they hay out. They stropped and refused to eat them! :))

The hay cookies mentioned in the original post are fantastic. I give them to my lot to keep them amused and they seem to love the taste of the hay. I also give them to Gucci - using these means no hay pokes, which Skinnies are prone to! I wouldn't use them on their own but they are good to keep the pigs happy.

I have to second the praise for the Alfalfa king hay - it's brilliant.

It lasts a really long time and is such high quality.

We have P@H here that sell the timothy and another local shop that sells the oat, alfalfa & barley one.

Well worth a go.

They'll go back to them - they are excellent boredom breakers.

I too like the compressed hay 'cookies' but:

a) They make more mess around the cage, they like to drag them all over the place!
b) I don't feel they do the job of maintaining good dental wear as well as loose, long-stranded hay.

Both your points are true but they are great as an "extra"! I feed them as a treat and they still get a full hay rack when I feed them the cookies as well!

The alfalfa king timothy hay is £7.99 in p@h for a 1.8kg bag and works out cheaper to buy from instore if you dont have many piggys and save on postage. But of course if you bulk buy online its cheaper. :))

True, although I was advising on the basis of someone thinking of replacing loose hay with only the cookies. :)
