hay and newspaper

just wondering if anybody uses newspaper with hay on top and if so if it's okay to use? plus and minus points?

I use it in the mezzanine level of my C&C only. That's because it's a "forage tray" for the pigs, so it's nothing but hay and sometimes bits of dandelion, herbs, berries etc. mixed in for them to sniff out. I wouldn't use it in my whole cage as it simply isn't absorbent enough. When mine wee on the upstairs level it goes straight through 3-4 layers of newspaper no problem. Also, if you can't change every day or two, hay can get musty pretty quickly, which doesn't smell nice and may be bad for their breathing.

In my outdoor hutch we use hay with newspaper and its never seem to do them any harm. As its only one hutch it means we have about 3-4 whole newspapers in at one point and it does the trick for us.

I have used hay and newspaper in my indoor cage. I use about 5-6 whole papers in a liberta 150 cage and clean it every 1-2 days. As has been said newspaper isnt absorbent but my boys love the hay. Am trying hay and puppy pads too and just seeing which agrees with us more
