I have heard of someone using charcoal to soak up wee etc in hutches (Over newspaper and under the hay) and apparently it works really well. Has anyone actually used this? Is it safe for gp's? If so what is it called? and where can I get it from?

Never heard of it - got any links? I'd worry about them eating it....

Not got any links. I worried about them eating it too .... which is why I thought I'd ask first! Will order Back 2 Nature Small Animal Bedding then! This is what the listing on ebay says:-

Uniquely formulated Back-2-Nature small animal bedding, made from 99% recycled paper with NO additives & NO chemicals. A superior animal bedding and litter, qualities include : Excellent natural odour control, Highly absorbent, a superior performance suitable for rodents, mammals, birds & reptiles. Biodegradable, Economical Long Lasting and Virtually dust-free.

Hmm, not one I've heard of either! Not too sure if I'm keen on the idea of it.

Neither am I which is why I asked on here first. I would have thought it would be very messy and clog up feet.

They'd look like coal miners after peeing on it and running around for a while! :woot:

Charcol is used extensively for filtering! Anything from fish tank filers to filtering domestic water! It is usualy supplied as "activated " and un activated! Depending what it is to be used for !
Example the antibacterial charcole wound dressings! This is usualy activated Charcol! , An old dog l onced had , had a wound that wouldn't heal
So my vet dressed it with a chachol impregnated dressing!

As for soaking up wee , l can't realy see it beeing very effective , also the price to cover a cage floor with the stuff
Would be rather high

I have just bought a bag of this, I put news paper on the bottom of the cage, then back 2 nature and then hay. I usually clean my piggies out everyday and I have gone 5 days ( spot cleaned daily though) but there is no smell what so ever. I tried carefresh bedding at first but I found that had a funny smell to it, was quite expensive and didn't last very long so decided to try back 2 nature which I much prefer. I have 3 cages and it has done all 3 with a full clean and replaced where the wee had been 4 days in a row and still have half a bag left. I bought the 30kg bag it's £17.99 in pets at home but found if for £13 on eBay so will be ordering from here in future :)

Have ordered some from ebay today for £13.64. Pleased it's good. Hopefully it'll be better than just newspaper and hay in the hutch which I have to replace alot and I run of newspaper quite frequently.

That's the problem I was having I actually really like it I have changed the newspaper under the most used part twice but the the bit of back to nature that was dry, I just brushed into the rest and replaced the paper and put the fresh bedding back over. I am actually very impressed with it and how long it's lasted, I've saved on loads of hay as well x

I have used Back2Nature in the past and although it is safe, I don't think it's the comfiest thing for delicate paws. I prefer Fitch bedding but I am switching to fleece, as soon as my liners arrive.
