CharlottiesPiggies

Well after his castration I have been checkin out his bits twice a day to check things are ok ;D but he seems to have poos stuck in his bottom that arent coming out :( so I tease them out - much to his dismay, I have never really noticed it. I thought his bits might have swollen stopping them passing out.

He is going for a check-up on Saturday at the vets, so I will ask then, but does anyone have pointers, its not impaction is it? :embarassed: :'(

i am not sure as i have always had girls, but what you're describing sounds a lot like what zoe has. poops stuck and not coming out and some are soft and some are normal. picked her up last night and she made a noise like wind down there and there was this brown gel stuff. hoping harley gets better, and that some one will come a long who can help you. hugs and cuddles to you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send harley :-* :-* :-* will watch this thread with interest. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Sometimes after a castration the anal muscles weaken which can cause impaction. Is there any swelling around his bottom that would give him trouble passing poo? Just wondering if he has any complications from his op as they can develop abcesses. After a guinea has been castrated we give bio lapis and oxbow critical care which helps with poo problems. Is the poo solid poos getting stuck or soft poos building up into a blob?
Sometimes if a castrated boar becomes impacted it can improve once he is sterile and gone in with some ladies Porky had impaction problems after his castrate but is much better now still have to check his bottom as he gets a few solid poos stuck in there but it is so much better than it used to be, the soft poos don't get stuck anymore. He has lots of just grass daily and this also seems to help.
Check him and clean his bottom out at least once a day it might just be a short term problem after his op.
Good luck at the vets.

i agree, it does sound like impaction. :( yeah you just need to make sure you clean him out ;) and i would try some pro-biotics as vikki says, if you aren't already O0 (((hugs))) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: my girlies send him kisses and bertie sends his manly best wishes! :D :smitten: :smitten:

Went to the vet yesterday and asked the assistant, she said not to remove the poos and apparently in the operation notes he was holding onto them, checked him this morning and he did have them stuck - she said feed plenty of forage and fruit 0:) so hes had a whole apple this morning to munch on during the day ;D

Apple is very acidic to be honest personally I would remove the poos as it must be uncomfortable for him - give plenty of hay and veg etc but a lot of apple might make his tummy upset
If you leave the poos in there that are stuck how is he going to pass any more poo? :-\

I disagree with the assistant, I think you should ease out any poop that is stuck so as not to cause a build up :-\

yeah i would have thought it's best to remove the poo ? glad he's eating anyway O0 don't feed too much apple as vikky said it is acidic and as well as making his tummy a bit weird, it could also cause sores round his mouth O0 feed plenty of hay and pellets and other veggies though O0 and make sure he's drinking O0 Hoping your little one starts to poo normally :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-* :-* :-*

people people i have just had tea! i dpon't know much about guinea pigs but here in australia i would ease the pop out as i would be concerned the poor piggy would get fly blown especially in this :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: heat! i would go back to the vet and ask to speak with the vet and see what they say and tell them what the assisant told you. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: i suffer with IBS(irraitable(sp) bowel syndrome) so i know how painful it can be imagine the pain for the little fella. besides feeling unconfortable too. :'( :'( :'( not sure but you are feeding him, he has problems pooping wouldn't there in the end have to be a blockage if you leave the poops there? sending you and harley hugs and cuddles and the girls send :-* :-* :-*

i would remove them too, 2 of my piggies get impacted now and again, and i would never leave it to build up, otherwise they wouldnt be able to pass any poo at all, and it would be ne big blockage the way i see it :-\

i thought it was dangerous to leave the poo isn't it? because it can cause a build up and he might not be able to poo at all if it all gets stuck xx0 also must be pretty uncomfortable :(

Yeah! I read somewhere that it can cause all sorts of health problems if an impacted boar is not cleaned out regularly. I'd deffo tell the Vet that the assistant is giving out seriously duff info to customers.

The way I see it, you can't do any damage by cleaning the poops out so that's what I'd do.

:smitten: ;) O0 Good luck Harley O0 ;) :smitten:

yeah i thought it could cause quite serious stuff :( i totally agree, it can't do any harm to clean it surely ?
Anyway (((hugs))) and piggie kisses for you and little harley, thinking of you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-*

I would clean him out :) Not nice for them to have poops stuck :(

he wasnt too bad today! He has a check up tommorrow at 3:10, I will ask then, also his umm doo-dah, mum was getting flustered early because its quite big, unlike my other boar Hamish, his stays inside quite alot of the time, but Harleys kinda sticks out more

sorry to be quite....but I'm trying to be as PC as poss ::)

good luck at the vet harley :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and hoping you get the right advice and harley don't flash at your grandma. it's not a nice thing to do! let us know how you get on at the vets and please tell the vet what the assistant told you. they should not give out any advice let alone bad advice. girls send :-* :-* :-* hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

WELL! hehe, they said hes stitches are recovering well from the op which is good, however she did say about his bits and pieces may not ever ' go in' - it just looks horrible with them hanging out, in comparison to Hamish anyway who's bits are all inside nice and tidy.

She said to feed him more fruit instead of hay and hardfeed, to ease the poops he needs wetter fibre rather than dry which is what he is mainly having now, so I am giving him an apple in the morning and evening and other sweet fruity things!

She said to clean him out occasionally in his bum, she said using some lubricant ^-^ and a cotton bud - it didnt smell good at all xx0

His cyst hasnt returned, so I am glad I caught it in the early stages- I think he is just going to be piggy diva - still not sure on bedding, the vet said Hemcore might be a wise choice, and not to use as much hay

She said some guineas just keep their poo's and have bits hanging out more than others :'(

good to hear harley is doing better :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: as for cleaning him out i would do it as often as needed as it must be jolly uncomfortable for him and in the summer he may get fly blown :'( :'( :'( as for his bits hanging out i am no expert as i stick to girls so can't really say, but if this is the case guess you will have to becareful of infections if it is always out and touching the ground. :o :o :o i do know hay is important to their diets, i would have though soft poops would have stuck more as they do with my zoe. i am sure when the others wake up they can advice you far better than i can. but am really happy harley is doing well. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: the girls send :-* :-* :-*

I am going to use grooming wipes in the summer and antiseptic cream when he needs it - Yeah it is a bit annoying, but hes a lovely piggy so :D ;D

glad he's doing better :smitten: yeah i'd clean as much as needed O0 and surely soft poos are more difficult to clean? ((hugs)) :smitten:

he is doing ok, he was a bit messy earlier, might get some talcom powder its better than using wipes - the vet suggested KY to ease to poos out :o id rather not get funny looks from people in the Tesco queue :embarassed: :'(

Oh dear i'm sorry i've just caught up with this thread, so sorry to hear about little Harley :'(
sending him some healing wheeks from Duke and I :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

glad you asked mary! ;D 98) :embarassed: LOL well glad he's not doing to bad ((hugs)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

KY is a human....use...lubricant..... ::) I could go into more detail, but ;D

ohhhhh xx0 ;D sorry! :embarassed: ;D right well maybe it's worth a go? if you can bear it! ;D :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
how is he now? Hope he's pooing better :smitten:

he is ok, I am giving him more fruit and grass rather than hard feed and hay O0

awww glad he's not too bad :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: how's his poos? ((hugs)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
