Hi everyone, i’ve been really busy this week with a sick piggie so my boar pair haven’t been handled in almost two weeks, well today Remy came down for a needed nail trim and I have noticed a very hard lump on his neck.

It’s about the size of a small gumball and, as I mentioned, very hard.

Vets will be phoned first thing tomorrow morning but I know lumps aren’t uncommon in pigs so I am hoping someone has any advice to give.
He’s only 5-6 months old and still very excited and eating as normal.

He hasn’t been weighed since two weeks ago (I missed last week, he was weighed Monday the week before). He will be weighed first thing tomorrow morning.

Is it movable underneath the skin? I’m hoping it’s just a harmless fatty lump or cyst. I hope the vet can fit you in x
I couldn't actually tell you unfortunately. 1, I was too nervous to poke about at it too much and 2, there is so much hair and chub there I wouldn't know how to tell if it was 'movable' or not.

I will be phoning first thing. I was just wondering if there was anything to tell off the positioning (neck) and the fact its very hard. I have heard of fatty lumps but I do not actually know what that entails, haha

As he is still very young and it has appeared quite quickly I would suspect an abscess but your vet will be able to confirm what it is and appropriate treatment.

It isn’t an abscess, as when poked (with a needle) nothing came out.

She would usually suspect mammary tumour (as the mammary tissue goes all along the stomach of the pig, male and female, up to the chin/neck) but because he’s only 5-6 months she’s a bit stumped. We have an appointment booked for the 27th, if it’s grown in size, he will have to go for a surgery but if not it may just be a harmless fatty lump.

Thanks all for your replies x

My Elizabeth has 3 lumps on her mammary line so we opted for a fine needle biopsy to be sent away for testing as my vet feared she had mammary cancer. Thankfully they came back as harmless fatty lumps so we just monitor them.

I am keeping everything crossed for a harmless fatty lump for your boy too x
