Happy or upset purr?

i hear my guinea pigs make the same noise when i pet him and when he hears a noise on the tv. I cant tell if they like the noise or if it startled them. anyone who can clarify the noise would be much appreciated. The context in the scenarios make it hard to tell if they are happy or the complete opposite.
 
I'm no expert, but I think your guinea pig is making this noise because he doesn't like something. My piggy does the same thing when she hears a loud noise, or since she is an Abyssinian, when I pet her fur the wrong way. Mine did get used to being pet overtime though, and rarely does it anymore, so hopefully if I'm right then yours will be the same. Hope I helped!

i have a two month peruvian boy and he does the same thing when i do that. it gets confusing because when my other shorthair pig is stretched out laying in a blanket next to me with his eyes closed, he makes the same noise. i guess that means he happy?
 
Usually if it is a soft, quiet purr they are happy but if it is loud and deep they might be annoyed. Sometimes when my guinea pigs are really annoyed they start circling each other to try and look threatening! 😆 They usually do this when someone picks them up the wrong way or they hear a loud noise.
