Hiya guys,

I've noticed on Youtube and all that many people use hand vacuums to clean up their fleece. I totally see that, because there is constantly hay stuck to my fleece and poops that don't want to go :p

So, I was wondering, has anyone used them? How are they?

And finally, why don't you just use a big vaccum with a hose?

Thanks x>>

I would love to know this! I have been wondering if I should get one myself.

Right, queen of hand vacuums here! :))
I've tried them all! Personally I havent had one that was powerful to suck the fleece up but I have one on top of the cage for sucking up spilt poops and hay. I used to use shavings up until june so it was great for sucking up shavings they kicked out of their cage.
I find it's easier to scoop because the hand vacs kinda chase the poops around so I have a cat litter scoop, turn it over and use it like a rake, scrape all the poops to one corner and give the fleece a little shake so they all jump into the scoop lol
My cage is in the kitchen (warmest room in the house rolleyes) and the bin is next to it so I scoop and chuck, so to speak.
I have tried most brands of handy vac cos I'm OCD about cleaning and we also have an original open fire place in our bedroom so they are great for sucking up the occaisonal brick dust or whatever that can drop down the chimney.
I have got a dirt devil at the moment but you have to hold the button in the 'on' positon all the while.
Philips- overpriced, just dont go there
argos- very good, broke mine dropping it outside on the way to the big bin rolleyes
asda- ok, good for the money
Best one- £12.99 from B & M Bargains! only broke THAT one cos i dropped it down the stairs.
I've had more but can't remember where they were all from but go for a higher voltage. If you run the vac backwards, like pull it towards you as opposed to pushing forwards over the fleece, this stops the fleece rumpling up and picks up more poops, I've just found it quicker to use a scoop and save the vac for spilt hay etc.

Hope that helps and I don't come across as a derranged hoover freak! :))

i just pick up the poo's..much quicker.. but obviously wash hands afterwards :p or if there is a big poo area i roll up the fleece and just shake it in a bin or outside.. the poo will fertilize the garden. lol

Wow, thanks for the replies! x>> Hmmm... well, maybe I'll try one out!

For me, the problam isn't poo, it's hay sticking on the fleece mallethead! Would the vaccum work for this?

it does if you've got one thats 12 volts or more but you'll need to regulary empty it, i dont find it too great for the tiny bits, which are the most annoying! you could try the hose on your normal hoover but mine was too strong and pulled the fleece up which was just annoying lol!

I use a Dyson (DC31) and I like it for poops.... it can lift hay too but too much and it jams up and needs unjamming. I use it on its side if it starts to lift the fleece and somehow that seems to help (dont know why). Its rechargeable which is handy but the charge only lasts about 6 mins which is plenty to do my 3 level 7 foot cage.

I dont have a main vacuum in my house as I just sweep the floors (no carpets) and use the handheld dyson.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll definitely get a hand vac when I get my 4X7 C&C Cage, because that would be a lot of poop to pick up!
How are hand vacs for noise leval? :)

hi

hi, i pick the poos out then i eithier use a smallbrush whick i find really good or lay the fleece down with somehting heavy eithier end e.g put one end under the sofa leg, then hoover it inbreeding

Ha ha this was almost exactly what I would write, I do the same things LOL here's to the poop picker upperers :)

I use a Bush DC 7.2V wet & dry - got it from Argos.

It's brilliant - picks all the poop, hay, hair, bits - unclick and empty - and although it's powerful enough to get the poo, it's not that powerful to suck the fleece up. I only use one of the 3 tools that came with it though - the long tuby thing - the brush is useless. I wash it out once a week to keep any smells down.

I've been really impressed with it and my piggies are now used to me doing their cages and don't bother at all.

I tried brushing but the poo pinged everywhere and ended up trodden in my socks :))
