i know when the buns lick us humans it's a sign of affection, just wondered if the same goes for piggies.

i'm a first time piggie mum, and adopted my pair on saturday, anyway the nervy boy, rocky, has started to trust me abit more (i keep sitting with them on my knee and just letting them roam), tonight rocky decided to investigate my hand and gave it a good lick for a short while...hoping it means he's happy and not that he's lacking salt!

well often piggies that lick your hands are doing it to obtain the sweat that contains salt.

In essence your piggie COULD have a mineral deficiency.
 
thanks, will put a mineral block in just incase and see how he goes.
 
One of my piggies licks me when she needs a wee, if I don't pay attention then she tugs at my clothes until I put her back in her cage
 
I see them advertised and that, we use to give them to our other guinea pigs.
 
my piggy licks my lips, nose, everywhere! - does that mean hes deficient in something then? I didnt think it was, just treat them as "kisses"!
 
One of mine is a licker but i'm quite sure he's not lacking anything i think its just a quirk of his and i take it as kisses :)p

Same here, i think some piggies are lickers and some are'nt! Alice never bites but constantly licks if you hand is anywhere near her face! Sean was licking me this morning too when i was trying to dry him after his bath! rolleyes
 
Some of mine lick me....Fifi is a mega licker :)) She licks my nose and lips too x)
I think they like the taste of the salt as opposed to them being deficient in it, so I wouldn't worry.
Lots of things on the market for piggies are not necessary and can even be dangerous. Mineral salt sticks are not needed at all!
 
Mine lick me and it's so cute - I think they just like the taste of the salt.

I wouldn't give them a mineral or salt block personally - they're not needed and I think they can cause more harm than good.
 
Mine lick me, think they just like the sweat lol! Doesn't mean they need it! I wouldnt bother with a mineral stone or anything x
 
thanks everyone - i did forwarn you i was a novice at this guinea pig thing - anyway i will just sit back and enjoy getting an extra handwash from little rocky then...i tell you between him and my bunster samson i wouldn't need a shower lol.
 
Most of our boys are lickers, especially Dylan. I like to think it's a sign of affection :)

Many new piggie slaves are led to believe they should purchase salt licks for piggies, they should never be used - don't feel bad, we all have to start learning somewhere! :)
 
Our old girl Ruby is a licker - anywhere and everywhere! It's what we call piggy kisses :) in our house, very sweet.
 
I hope it's kisses! Ernie came up to me the other day when he was playing out and gave my hand a good lick. I just took it to mean "I guess you're not so bad, after all"!
