Hi guys this isn’t guinea pig related but i’m freaking out about my boyfriends hamster. She periodically makes these wheezing squeaks for a profusive amount of times. She’s about 9 months. It’s been happening for about id say two weeks give or take. She is eating and drinking normally and she is acting as always with bright eyes and eagerness to play. I know this isn’t guinea pig related but I have asked for help on here for my guinea pig and your guys gave me amazing advice. Please help i’m freaking out. I will attach a link to a google drive with a recording of her sounds. keep in mind it comes and it goes but she sounds awful. Please help. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xb82FaVy4YPOxY_awobZpTlsVMGF11kh/view?usp=drivesdk

She really needs to see a vet.
In the meantime how big is her enclosure, and what bedding are you using?
Small cages with plastic houses and improper substrate can cause ammonia issues and respiratory problems.
I would make sure her cage is clean (but don't take everything out - hamsters need to keep their stash and a place that smells like them to keep their stress levels to a minimum) and focus on providing a deep, natural substrate, and multiple hides made of natural materials like wood.

Hi guys thank you for your responses, we are going to take her to the vet soon. I will keep you updated. but i’ll inform you on her cage. I swear i do not have her in the awful pet store cages. She has a 40 gallon tank, it’s 6 by 30. We use paper based stuffing for her bedding. She has chew toys and lots of fluff bedding to burrow in. She has cloth hides and we clean her regularly as well as spot clean. We give her play time everyday and free roaming time. we keep up with her that’s why i’m totally freaked out why she’s having these issues. I will keep you guys updated when we take her to the vet tomorrow. Thank you guys for your concern!

I hope she's okay... I have hammies too, they are sweet little guys. Please let us know!

I hope that all goes well at the vets tomorrow and that she's ok. Her home sounds perfect but can I suggest that you take out the fluffy bedding? Unfortunately it can be dangerous as it can tangle around their limbs and cut off blood supply

oh no i didn’t know that! do you have a suggestion on what bedding to give her? should we be using fleece like for guinea pigs? we’ve been giving her fluff because she loves to burrow and dig tunnels for herself.

what time of hamster is she? I have a Syrian, Dwarf, and 2 Robos. Syrians are very quiet, dwarfs only make noise when extremely aggravated, but its very normal for Robos to make high pitched squeaks as they go about their day.

Pretty sure they just meant hamster fluff (the cotton-type stuff that can be used for nesting.) Hamsters absolutely should have paper bedding instead of fleece, as they spend a lot of time burrowing and will be unhappy on fleece! If you want to give softer material for bedding, you can try paper towels and/or toilet tissue. Ours really like making nests out of the paper towels, it's a little enrichment activity for them to do!
