I was wondering if anyone had any advice or experience with hairloss in an older pig?
I have a sow called Fred and she is a Pets At Home special, I estimated that she was born in January and it will make her 7yrs old next year. She has had a good life, had one litter and retired with an infertile boar at my mams house. When he died she came back to live with me and now shares a pen in the living room with 4 other sows. I have never known her to have any medical issues apart from the spurs growing pretty quickly on her feet.
Today I had her out to trim the spurs, I dont handle her that often as she is not a snuggly pig and prefers Guinea Pig company and I noticed this....

The hairloss runs from her armpits down her chest and little on her legs

It doesn't look sore, mitey or a fungal infection. As I said I dont handle her that often and this is the first time I noticed. As a precaution I thought I should get some ivermec and do them all, which I haven't done in a very long time as I never noticed any difference if I did or didnt use it.
Do you think this could be due to her losing condition due to her age? She has lost a bit of weight as she used to be a plump sow which I would imagine this would come with age also.
Any ideas?
Thanks Emma x

If you are sure there is no mite activity, this could well be a hormonal imbalance problem, due to aging. It is fairly common in elderly sows. There is no treatment, but nothing to worry about. It may stabalize or could get a bit worse.

My sow lost her fur in old age (8 years old) of her tummy and back leg. To protect the skin from urine scold I used vaseline twice a day and shampooed her once a week. Her fur did start to re-grow and then fell out again. Like MaryH said I think it was hormonal.
