Hello. I have a male guinea pig who has overnight chewed all his fur off his back and its really sore and inflamed. I'm going to go to vets is there anything anyone can suggest at what this could be or why. ? He is a long haired pig. I'm just concerned because of how quick he's done it to himself.

Hi

It could be mange mites (trixacarus caviae)? Please do not home treat on spec and wait until you have seen your vet for diagnosis and a good quality ivermectin or selamectin product. But especially in frailer guinea pigs mange mites can come up incredibly fast when a brittle immune system is overhwelmed. Many guinea pigs have a reservoir of eggs in their skin that is normally kept under control by a fully working immune system. Any treatment cannot kill off those dormant eggs, only any emerging mites.

New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites

Once you have a diagnosis, members with more experience with badly affected rescue piggies can help you with further tips.
