My sow who is just 1 year has hair loss on her back. Was fine one night and the next day was gone. Have been to vets who gave all my pigs xeno 450. They have had two rounds and third in a few days but showing no hair ga
Vet never mentioned cysts and she doesn't have crusty nipples, or noticed any behaviour changes. Should I wait until after third dose or push for them to check for cysts, another cause

Hi sorry post went all over the place there. I have a sow who is experiencing hair loss. Came out the blue and doesn't seem to be growing back. Went out on the grass so assumed maybe mites and vet prescribed xeno 450 x 3 doses for her and my other two. Just a few days from having third dose and no grow back.

Vet never mentioned cysts and she hasn't crusty nipples or had a ant behaviour changes. Should I have expected a growth of fur by now, take her back to check for something else or will it take a while.

Thanks so much

Amy

today after 2 doses of xeno. Have bathed eith lice and easy after first dose and been putting some of gorgeous guinea neem oil on

When you see ‘new born pup’ under your avatar, you will be able to add a picture. It will also help us to see the extent of the loss.

Hair loss can occur for several reasons.
Cysts are less likely to be an issue given her age. They tend to occur in sows over 2 years of age.
Is there any chance she been barbered by her cagemate?
Obviously this is a guess, barbering tends to leave a stubble where the hair is eaten off rather than where hair falls out and nothing is left.

Hair regrowth won’t necessarily occur quickly and it also depends whether the cause of the hair loss is mites and whether she has received the right treatment for the cause. Treating for a parasite would be a normal first step though.

Have you tried to add pictures? I can’t see any and I’m assuming not given your forum registration will still be going on in the background and the attach files button won’t yet be available to you but there is a very large blank space in your post - I don’t want to delete the space on your post and inadvertently delete something you wanted to be there!

I see you’ve made a new post! I’ve merged it for now.
EDIT - ive now fixed the first post to remove the big gap

Now the picture is there it makes things clearer.
Did the vet check consider potential fungal causes? Xeno won’t cure a fungal issue

This was the first morning I noticed it. Doesn't seem sore and not noticed over itching at it. The night before had no loss whatsoever so not come on gradually either!

Sorry making work for you I assumed it had been deleted so made another post

Maybe ask your vet, especially if the 3rd dose of xeno does no improve the hair loss.At the beginning of fungal or mites pursuing, they can both produce very similar symptoms.
Another vet check is probably needed.Good luck at clearing it.😊

I would finish the course of Xeno and see how things are after that, and then go back to the vet if no improvement

Hi and welcome

It takes about a month for hair to grow back. Please be patient.
In any case, please conduct the third round of xeno. An unfinished course of mites treatment could mean that they can make a comeback again some weeks down the line and it also can promote resistance and makes it harder to beat them off when you really need to.

Ovarian cyst hair loss never happens on the back, but on the sides of the belly and sometimes on the belly, too.

If the hair really won't grow back after a month or if the bald patch continues to grow, then it is time for your vet to look for other potential causes of which ovarian cysts is definitely not one.

Yes was always going to finish the treatment. What would I look out for in the meantime for fungal ? Obviously will take back to vet if don't see an improvement after the third round

Fungal typically causes crusts but it would be the next port of call. But it also doesn't look like a ringworm patch to me; you still have hairs growing across the bald area. Just be patient; it is only about two weeks in. As long as the bald area is not growign any further, I would strongly recommend to wait.
Ivermectin will suppress any fungal temporarily but it cannot heal it. Right now, there are no markers for a fungal skin infection - no large skin flakes or crusty exudate and I can also not see any sign of a dark pink ring ringworm ring on the edge of the ald area. Nor will your have seen signs for an acute fungal skin infection, or they would have prescribed different treatment.

Please be patient, stop overthinking and give it more time.

Thanks for putting my mind at ease. Was worrying that i was missing something like cyst and she could be getting worse whilst waiting bit will keep an eye on her for now
