Hello all,

We are new to this forum and to Guinea pigs. We recently got two young boars and have just noticed one of them has a patch of very short hair which is discoloured. See attached photo. Any ideas what could be causing this?

We have read about ringworm however it’s just one patch on his body and doesn’t seem to be sore.

Any ideas would be great. We plan to take him to the vets this week.

Welcome to the forum

It’s possible it’s his colouring but why it would be shorter could have a multitude of reasons - parasites or self-barbering for example.

You would need to have a hands on check with a vet to find out what is causing it

Let us know how you get on

When I looked at the picture it looked like it was on his back end, can I check where is that actually on his body?

Yes it’s about half way down his back just to one side. He is a long haired so you can only see it when you push his hair forwards. I didn’t know about self barbering but yes that could be the case.

Vet couldn’t tell me what it was but said it’s nothing to worry about at least - not mites or ringworm and the skin below is healthy. So I guess we wait and see
