Just wondering if anyone can give me any advise. I Was in the piggy room today when I noticed Francesca and gwen chattering their teeth at each other and shouting . After watching them, I saw fran chasing gwen around either trying to smell her or bite her. Gwen would jump and run away, chattering her teeth. Fran just would NOT give up. and anytime fran would go near gwen the shouting and chattering would start. They never fight, they've been together since birth and are mother and daughter. I bribed them with celery and they ate that seperatly then fran just started it all over again, chasing her, chattering her teeth. Poor duke stood between them chattering his teeth then he kind of just gave up and left the women to it lol. He was pretty narked though and stood in the corner grumbling to himself. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened today, just routine as normal. Ive seperated franesca at the moment and theres peace in the cage but i dont know what to do from here. Can anybody give me any advice? They've all been together since birth and usually get on fine. ive checked over both pigs and there are no bite marks. Its just so unlike francesca.....

She might be in season... I would leave them to it unless blood is drawn but then again thats just my opinion.. from what I've read.

Easier said than done rolleyes

ok I'm gonna sound really dumb now but how do you know when a piggy is in season? and does that mean fran is in season too or do they come into season at different times? I was just gonna leave them to it but it was stressing duke out and gwen and even when fran would walk away, she'd still be in the corner chattering away....come to think of it, maybe fran was just smelling her - her face and her back end? she just wouldnt let it drop!

They come into season 15-17 days I think it is (says the person with 2 spayed sows), I have no experience with sows really...

*SHOUTS* Wiebke...

But I have read about sows being grumpy during there seasons... Dukes a man he can deal with it lmao :)).

Oooo I have also not much experience with piggies... 2 males falling out and my trio.. thats about it.. Sorry I'm really useless rolleyes!

Sending friendly vibes your way!

I had to laugh, he had this stunned kind of look on his face, then started chattering too. then kind of edged past them, and grumbled off into a different corner of the cage. lol x
I wouldnt say it was them in season though - maybe it is but its never happened before - well - not since ive had them at least. Thats why i was a little shocked - frans not normally as persistant as that.

If Fran's aggressiveness persists and is not over by tomorrow, I'd make a trip to the vet.

Poor Duke - he certainly won't want to be caught out between the handbags!

I just phoned the vets and they said keep an eye on them for a few days and see how they get on but it sounded like dominance issues. wierd. Fran is back in and you can cut the atmosphere with a knife. Both girls are at opposite ends of the cage, chattering and i saw fran stomp her front feet. every now and again, fran will go over and try to nudge gwen and there are teeth chattering and shouts, then gwen runs away.

update

ok they're still not tlking, still alot of teeth chattering when one goes near the other and if duke is with the other one, the other will stay away. If it is dominance how long will this go on for? Theres been no blood or proper fighting yet, but they clearly dislike each other.... Just not sure what to do for the best.

As long as there are no bloody fights, I would wait and see whether it resolves itself within a couple of weeks.

If it doesn't get any better, I would think about separating the two girls long term and be looking for a new young friend for one of the girls.

Sorry to hear your sows have fallen out, have heard of another trio where one of the sows drew blood on both her sister and neutered boar and it was thought to be hormonal by the vet and within a week they are all back together again but the sow is still not completely right but they are all friends again

fingers crossed for you

what does it mean when one of them vibrates/purres at the other. Francesca seems to be doing this alot. like just now she went over to gwen, gwen didnt do anything and she kind of walked off really slowely vibrating and purring.... its getting a bit better though i have to say. Francesca isnt chasing her anymore anyway so theres not as much teeth chattering going on.

Thank you for clearing that up! :) I thought as much - its calmed down alot since, but I'm still keeping my eye on them both. How do i know if fran is successful at her attempt to take over? gwen just either runs away or chatters back. Today she hasnt run away as much - like when fran came over to her, she just ignored her and fran walked away rumbling. I wonder whats brought this on? Frans always been bottom of the pack, although she's always had a bit of a feisty side.

Hi Candywishes,

I'm Gwen and Fran and Dukes original mama, and I come on here from time to time to get my piggy fix and to see if there's any news on the piggies.

I just wanted to let you know that although several of the piggy family bickered from time to time, Fran and Gwen rarely did. however on the day before i took them to live with Jools, Fran (the black and tan one? we called her rampage as she always had a bit of an edge :)) ) stated provoking Gwen in the way you ae describing and she actually pounced on her at one point and pulled a chunk of her hair out! I had never seen them do anything like that before and the next day they still werent friends but things got better.

maybe it is her play for dominance, but whatever it is i just wanted to let you know it has happened before and they did get over it, even though its horrible to watch and whenever any of them got aggitated with each other i used to panic and try to separate them because i didnt know what to do for the best!

well i hope things are doing better now and i hope you are enjoying them and they are all well.

Hi Dani thanks for that, since ive had them ive never seen Fran do that before- she fiesty but knew her place. I'm keeping an eye on them and no bloods been shed yet although gwen is getting slightly peed off and duke is just ignoring the women lol x

I put up a towel tent for them today and all three pigs made a dash for it - untill francesca decided actually it was HER castle, and booted gwen out. :)) Gwen doesnt take it lying down though and comes straight back again, telling her off, and chattering her teeth. I hope it gets better soon, I hate it when they're not friends. :(

Duke is so soft, and basically does what he's told by the bossy women, he's not fussed love him xoxo
