Hi everyone , my 2 year old female guinea pig went to the vets on Sunday as she wasn't eating , she was diagnosed with gut stasis and given an injection to stimulate her gut, pain medication and some critical care. It's been two days of force feeding her and she has shown no improvement. She has absolutely no interest in food and all she does is lie in her house. I understand this is a process but I am concerned - should there be improvement by now? Please help

Hi

I am very sorry.

Is she still on gut meds or has she only had the one-off medication? Please contact your vets if there is no improvement and she needs regular meds.

Some guinea pigs bounce back from GI stasis quickly but in other cases (usually with other underlying issues, whether they have already manifested or not) this can take longer. A few piggies sadly won't make it even with good care.

Please take the time to read the GI stasis care chapter in this guide link here, which you may find helpful.
It also contains a link to a longer stasis experience with a seemingly healthy piggy of mine (Pili Pala 'Butterfly' in Welsh) who thankfully made it through after three days without any gut movement at all and went on to live for another year if with a growing number of issues to nearly 6 years of age. You may find that thread interesting as it seems to come closer to your own case. It is very draining and emotionally exhausting.

I am thinking of you and your poorly girl and am keeping my fingers firmly crossed.

Hi, thanks for the response. She has had one injection to stimulate her gut on Sunday , and since then she has just had meloxicam every 12 hours and oxbow critical care . She is back at the vets tomorrow morning, so hopefully they can find a solution. She seems exhausted, all she wants to do is lie down. I have been weighing her - before all this started she was 1.2kg. On Sunday she was weighing at 1kg and that has pretty much stayed the same since then so I guess no loss is good? It's just so sad seeing her like this. Turning her nose up at all kinds of food :(

She should be getting gut stimulants.

Have you read the link I have provided in my last post? Can you please tell us whether she gut is mobile again (poos are appearing) or whether she is still in full stasis and therefore lethargic.
