I recently gave one of my guinea pigs a bath and realised he has a huge bald patch behind his ear? His other ear doesn’t have this. I’ve also noticed black little specs, I’m not sure what they are and if the bald patch is normal

Hi and welcome!

Please check whether there is another bald patch of the same shape behid the other ear. Only of the two parches are not symmetrical should you see a vet.

See a vet for potential parasites and do not home treat on spec with baths, creams or low dosed pet shop products. It is ultimately cheaper to see a vet and pay once for appropriate good quality treatment than waste lots of money on inappropriate products like a bath etc.

Guinea pigs regulate their body temperature via increased blood flow through the skin; the ears are the biggest area where heat is shed. For that reason, there is no insulating hair growing behind the ears. The shape of a piggy's ear patches is as unique as a fingerprint in humans but they have two of the same.
