Hi all. My soon to be 5 year old male boar has for the past few days been making an odd sound I’ve never heard him make before. It’s like a deep purring noise but he only does it when he’s using his mouth and doing something on his left underside.

Not sure what it is. He’s not impacted, not lost weight, seems himself. Is eating normally. He’s never been a huge water drinker but he is drinking.

I’ve noticed his poops are smaller and very pointy. But the noises he’s making, I can’t tell if he’s making them when pooping.

If it is when pooping, is he in pain?

And if he’s making the noise when when not pooping, is he in pain?

It’s always when he’s licking/using his teeth to scratch or do something on his under belly or side of belly. I’m sleeping downstairs on the sofa for the past several weeks as my other 2 male boars wee blood and receiving medication so initially I thought the noise was coming from them. But they don’t make any noise when they wee or poop.

My 5 year old boar is my first Guinea and touch wood, has never had any problems. It’s his 5th birthday on Halloween and the thought of something being wrong with him is worrying me.

All 3 boys are kept in separate cages and are not allowed to mix due to suspected interstitial cystitis and are indoor Guineas with large c&c cages.

Thank you

Having vet check him out would be best
Keep a daily check on his weight while you are concerned about him. Smaller poops can indicate reduced hay intake.

A vet visit is required if you think there might be pain.
What I can add is that older piggies can get arthritis which leads to swollen joints and difficulty moving about. George has daily loxicom for his (he's nearly 5) as the vet noticed he had stiff knees and also there was hair collected in the little gum pocket where his bottom incisors grow. He'd been nibbling at the painful area on the underside of his groin. He moves about much better now. I don't know how this would affect the gut directly but certainly pain can put them off their food.
