I've a support worker that visits twice aweek,so I can engage with the outside world.
The support worker suggested I should rehome my guinea pigs.
What is it that someone thinks guinea pigs are disposable.
Just for you to know,my piggies are well cared for, always have a vet fund. They give me alot of joy,it's a hobby.
I've got 12 and that is my limit.
Maybe the support worker could rehome her grand children.🤣
I thought how rude! Explained there are lots of guinea pigs in rescue, full to the brim.My piggies are not going anywhere !

Gosh I’m shocked at that Eileen - I’m sure your piggies keep you going - mine do and did during ‘lockdown’
I agree why do people think guinea pigs or any animals are disposable.
I would have thought a support worker would have empathy and realise how important your piggies are to you ❤️

Unbelievable! Do these people have any training whatsoever :( Take no notice of them, most peoples pets are a huge comfort and a reason to get out of bed in a morning.

With my chronic condition, sometimes I find it hard to get out of bed and get going, my piggies make me do that. They are well looked after and get cleaned out once a week. I can't manage more than that because of my bad back. Piggies bring me happiness.

What your Support Worker suggested is awful. If your piggies were a dog or a cat would she have suggested you rehome them?

Oh dear - clearly not a pet owner and insensitive as well. :(

Ask whether they have never heard of the benefits of pets for people with long term mental health and health issues?

Similar to @Betsy . I used to joke that my beastie boys are my emotional support animals but they really are.

I had someone comment, after the goblins arrived, that the one thing that could be guaranteed to put a smile on my face is to ask me about them. Nothing else has that effect on me. They're why I get out of bed, why I don't spend all day in my chair, why I make an effort, in part also why I quit smoking .

They're my responsibility, and my support workers know that. We focus on other things when they're here.

:)What was her reasoning for suggesting you re-home them? Did she think they were too much work for you? Or was she just ignorant and doesn't see the appeal herself
I think the support worker thought it would save money and time.i can see the reasoning.maybe an open discussion would be best, and not judgement.
I agree the reasons maybe we'll intentioned.Though on both counts I'm managing the guinea pigs well.
They give me a sense of purpose..
I will have a discussion with support worker next week explain how important they are to me.🙂

Might be worth saying that although they were well intentioned, you found the manner in which it was raised to be judgemental and inconsiderate. Hopefully they can consider more appropriate ways to raise it with others in the future

I am very sorry Eileen, your support worker is very insensitive and clearly not an animal lover 😞 What was her reasoning for suggesting you rehome your piggies?

You’re right and may be you should suggest she rehomes her children / grandchildren!

My support worker was nothing but supportive when I lost Edward, Ella and Elizabeth and when I rehomed Esme x

Thanks for your support Lady Kelly. It is best to turn it into a positive communication.it just met me with surprise.as it was only the second meeting!

Maybe she's just a bit blunt with how she speaks and doesn't realise how it came across. I'm trying my best to have a mindset of giving benefit of the doubt until I have more information but it's hard as I'm quite hot headed and if it were me I would have probably kicked off and refused to see her again in the heat of the moment 🤦‍♀️

@eileen i have only just seen this thread. That is just an awful thing for your support worker to say. You love your piggies and they are very well cared for. Some people just don't understand the joy small pets bring. I'm afraid that i am rather outspoken and they would have got a rather sharp reply.

Of course not! Your piggies are so lucky to have you!
And I do wish you had replied to say that about her grandchildren. That might have made her think twice

I wonder what she thought you might spend your time and money on instead? And what would fill the void not having them would create? It is your time and your money and they are your family.
