Hi everyone! My guinea pigs have gone off their pellets/nuggets. They currently have the pets at home complete pellets, I’ll link the ones they have here!

They aren’t eating them as much as they used to, they do still eat some but I think honestly they’ve got bored of them, as they’ve had the same ones for over three years. They still eat plenty of hay and they have their fresh veggies daily too, so I’m not too worried about them not getting enough food, however I know they need the nutrition from their nuggets too. Can anyone recommend a different brand of pellets/nuggets that your piggies love that I could gradually switch them over to by mixing them gradually til we fully switch? Hoping that might make them enjoy them a bit more. Also going to try feeding pellets in the morning, and veggies in the evening as usually they get both together as they like to munch on their pellets throughout the night/day.

If they’re eating their veggies and hay , I wouldn’t worry if they’re not eating their pellets . Pellets aren’t essential in a guinea pigs diet .

I only feed mine pellets as I think I’d have a mutiny on my hands if I didn’t 🤣😂

I'm the same with pellets, too scared to cut them out completely. :))

I agree with the above @Xmolxlie they do get bored with having the same ones, try mixing a different pellet in with the ones you have. You need to make changes gradually.

Pellets only add vit c really from what I understand. It is possible to go without pellets as long as you are feeding a variety of veggies, forage and good quality hay.

My 4 are on sciences selective grain free. I limit the pellets to about 10g per pig. I don't want a fat pig and my guys body condition is really good at the moment and they're super shiny.

I only have one pig that isn't fussed over pellets the other 3 love them. I just make sure I feed a variety.

If they aren't losing weight don't sweat it. They'll take what they need. It could just be that the hay they get at this time of year is so delish they're eating more of that! Or that they are eating a lot more grass if they go outside. Or is your bag really really old and might have got damp or gone off a bit? I've ended up with 2 types as pigs arrived with their own preference so everyone gets a mix of PaH and Burgess blackcurrant (but PaH are most popular!)

If they start losing weight week on week maybe have a rethink but they really don't 'need' very many pellets at all and their bladder health will be all the better for them eating fewer. It might also be the weather... mine are ignoring the bowl for a few days and then really going at it every now and again. Just keep an eye on the weight and remember 80% of a great diet is hay, pellets are only 5% tops.

Thanks so much everyone! They have been eating a wider range of hay lately as I’ve found a new couple of hays they enjoy as well as their regularly Timothy and meadow hays, they really love the oaty harvest mix from PaH. I’ve bought a couple different types of pellets and I’ll try mixing and matching them, but given what everyone has said I’m not too worried now!
