Hello everyone,
Every few months my guinea pig goes stiff for half an hour! It’s like he is trapped in his body. His feet work but his jaw locks. And eyes don’t move. I have been to vets and they don’t know. After about 30 mins he comes round and will sleep for a few hours then he acts normal. His 4 years old. Has sterile IC. On metacam for 2 years and cystease and pro c and potassium citrate for it. He had a attack yesterday you would never know now pop Corning and eating and running around. His weight is 1,250 .
I’m baffled.
Every couple of months this happens.

Hi

I am very sorry but neurological problems in guinea pigs are pretty much the most under-researched area in a generally massively under-reseached species where most vets usually have to transfer experiences from other species. That is when any vet gets a decidedly panicked look in their eyes. :(

You can find the sum of all research in this guide here (the second half) but I doubt that you will be impressed or any wiser. Sorry. This is a new one for us if it is not epilepsy which guinea pigs can very occasionally get (see second half of the guide).

Yes it is a strange one. In 8 years of keeping piggies I have not seen this. Thank you I will have a read.

In nearly 20 years of this forum with literally tens of thousands of questions in this section we have never heard of this.

But as I have said, this is the least researched of all areas - and research in humans and other pet species like dogs and cats is still very much discovering new things all the time. It takes time to trickle down to the lowly piggies...
