I went to a zoo today and found they had guinea pigs being kept with a rabbit AND CHICKENS!

Am now writing the letter of complaint, but I was wondering if anyone could give me anything to put in the letter about why chickens shouldnt be kept with the pigs and rabbit.
Will post the full letter when I have finished to see what you all think :)

Thanks
xx

I'm sure chicken poo isn't good for pigs. The diets are different. Animals should be kept with their own species etc etc.

hHow bizarre?! Chickens! mallethead

Can you remember I think Vikki rescued some pigs that were being kept with birds and I think they died :S Or was that something else?

I remember something about birds and chickens. Whether there is something in the poop that would cause a major problem. :(

I can't ever remember seeing guinea pigs kept with chickens! rolleyes

Rabbits .. yes ... particularly in places that have a pets corner or a pet store that has no knowledge that guinea pigs shouldn't be housed with rabbits!

I am sure that their dietary needs are very different - strange combination.

I might be wrong and am happy to stand corrected but I'm sure I remember something about hens being capable of catching and killing mice, albeit piggies are a bit bigger but I imagine the chickens are capable of delivering serious damage to them.

Its that the bacteria in chicken poo can cause serious health problems in guinea pigs and rabbits that can be lethal or t least disabling ie chest nfections and eye problems to say the least!
Good Luck!

:S what happened there, went to edit and it dissapeared :S :S

what zoo was it?

Animal welfare at zoos is normally really hot

where they actualy shut in a pen with the chickens or where the guinea pigs in an open pen and chickens where wandering around the pen?

There was no roof on the pen so I think they must have gone over the wall. They were eating all the animals food though.

Banham zoo.

Really surprising for a zoo to have a mixture like this. Guineapigs should not be eating contaminated grass from chicken poo and also chickens can peck, scratch and kick them !

Well I keep my guinea pigs in the same run as the hen and rabbits! Spangle the hen has never flown over the hedges or pecked the guinea pigs, she does'nt bother with guinea pigs! They have lived together now for over 2years and all fine!rolleyes

The pen was indoors and wasn't that big. Shame I didn't get a pic then I could explain it a bit better.
Do you still think i should send the letter anyway? but just about keeping the rabbits with pigs, the straw and blood on the floor? Should of really said there and then but it was my little sisters birthday party and was a bit hectic at the time.
