Guinea Pigs and Fleas

Hello! My Dad came to visit me at the weekend and saw my 2 piggies for the first time, which live in a cage in my living room. My dad has 2 cats and after he left I found a flea on me. I instantly squished it and threw it outside. I have got a couple of bites but may just be from that 1 flea, however I'm so worried there is going to be more. Does anybody know of any household sprays I can use around my guinea pigs? And what i can use to treat them. Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum. I think cat and dog fleas do not like the taste of piggies. So they will be fine.

Piggies do not had a species specific flea and cat and dog fleas will not stay on your piggies.

Please do not use any sprays on or near your piggies. Cat and dog flea products can be toxic to piggies.

Fleas are pretty species specific, dog and cat fleas will not stay on guinea pigs. No need to treat them. Any sprays to kill fleas in the environment, like carpets, are not safe for small animals and they shouldn't be in the vicinity if you have to use them, but I doubt it would be needed for a stray flea brought in on a human.

Guinea pigs don't have species specific fleas that can survive on them for any length of time.
