Our 5 year old guinea pig Nimri is suffering from rather vague symptoms and yet it's clear something is wrong.

He has soft droppings, and has lost weight, and sometimes his droppings are getting left in the sac instead of taken out. He was seeming of quite normal brightness, still eating his dry food and dinner and drinking well. The vet said there was some blood and glucose in his pee, whereupon he was given antibiotics. After this, there was no more blood and glucose in his urine and his weight seemed stable, at least when his food was supplemented with a little 'Supreme Recovery' food.

The antibiotics finished on Monday and he was doing fine until today wherein the poor pig was floppy feeling and lethargic, and also shivering and complaining when taken out of the cage more than usual, as if something is paining him. Something seems definitely wrong.

The vet has given him an ultrasound which found nothing, and an x-ray that identified potential small bladder stones but the vet seen is not one particularly experienced in guinea pigs so the diagnosis is not certain- they were going to ask their colleagues about it.

He's had no signs of straining to pee, no squeaking in pain or anything of that nature.

I’m sorry to hear this.

How much weight has he lost?
Is he still losing weight?

If he is still losing weight please step in and syringe feed him a lot more of the supreme recovery feed. He will definitely still need it. You said that you saw his weight stabilised when he had it.
He may be eating dry food (I assume you mean nuggets) and veg but he is losing weight because he isn’t eating enough hay. Your syringe feeding replaces the hay intake and he needs to be given enough to keep his weight stable at each morning weight chrck. That is usually a minimum of 60ml of syringe feed each day.
His lethargy could be down to reduction in fibre (hay) intake. A piggy in pain will also stop eating enough hay.

Please remove veg from the diet if he has soft poops.
He may also need a probiotic or poop soup from a healthy companion to help stabilise the gut

Of course the vet will need to give a proper diagnosis and with vague symptoms mystery weight loss is a difficult thing.

Perhaps there is another vet knowledgeable in piggies you can see?

I’m so sorry Nimri is poorly. Id get him seen again or by a different vets. Is he on pain medication? Antibiotics can upset their tummy and appetite. You can try some probiotics. Pets at home sell Pro C. I mix it in with the recovery feed. Even small stones could cause pain. I hope you can find out what is wrong and he’s soon on the mend.
