Hi there, do you have any tips on feeding my piggy critical care, she just will not let me do it via a syringe. Thanks so much

You can try offering it on a spoon or in a bowl. You sometimes just have to be firm with them. What is she on critical care for?

She pee'd blood a few weeks ago and was checked to make sure no UIT, Stones and that came back negative. Later that week her poops were very loose so I took her back and they have said she makes noises when her uterus is pressed and is a bit sore so she is on metacam and bayalin. The vet said to give her critical care for a couple of days to get her weight up, but she protests a lot and struggles and then I feel bad.

You could add a small bit of mashed banana to it to make it tastier or try a bit of grated carrot or sweet potato. Add in a few rolled oats too.

You just have to be firm. You could see if she will take another probiotic better. If she has a companion you could make up some poo soup. Put said friend in a box and feed them some veg out a herb. Collect freshly dropped poops and soak in water. Then you can syringe the water to your sick piggy. This all has to be within five minutes. The poops have to be fresh as in just dropped.

If she’s not eating enough hay by herself then you will have to continue syringe feeding. You should weigh her daily at the same time every day. Then you can use that to adjust the amount you syringe feed her.

I hope she starts feeling better soon.

Thanks so much. It's stressful but I just want her to get better. What other probiotic would you recommend? I'm in the UK. Thanks Julie

Have a look at the link I posted above.

I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with ongoing health issues, so often have piggies needing syringe feeding. I very rarely use Critical Care, as most guinea pigs hate it. I generally use the guinea pig's normal nuggets, which I pop into a cup and pour very hot water over them. They mush up lovely and can be fed, once they have cooled down. I find piggies love them warm. You can also add a scoop of pro-biotic to the mix too!

I was asked by my local vets to make a syringe feeding video, and you can see it here. Today's instructional video on our Facebook page - Syringe feeding | The Guinea Pig Forum
