Helloooo
I’m wondering thoughts and I’m also probably going to vent/release stress too.
After I had to have my beautiful Eddie put to sleep, I got another boy for my Teddie, call Errik. When I brought him home in November he clearly was right, as he kept sneezing and snorting. I took him to the vets and they put him on the antibiotics and put in my notes probably a move of home. I was told from where I’d got him from that they will cover the vet bill (that never happened).

2 months later and I still don’t think Errik is right, he makes this strange sort of cough/hiccup every day, it’s very peculiar, I’ve tried to record it but it’s so quick that I can never get it. In addition to this he’s now sneezing and snorting. I’ve listened to him daily and now I can hear he has a slight wheezing/congestion so will take him to the vets tomorrow.

What I’m worried/wondering can this be something other than a respiratory infection? As he’s always been making these noises even after his last course of antibiotics.

Eddie did something similar, he ended up having what seemed like 2 strokes so was put to sleep. The vet said it’s likely how he was bread which caused this. But since researching further, it could have been a build up of pressure and when he started the anti-inflammatory it caused the build pressure to relieve itself and caused signs of stroke.

I’m so worried that I’m going to end up with another seriously poorly guinea pig and I don’t want to fail him, or Teddie to go through another trauma of loosing a brother.

I'm also so worried that every advice is you have to see an exotic vet, but I haven’t a clue to even know how to find one. When I try to research I get mixed messages. Do I even need to go to a specialist or do I go back to the normal vet?

To summarise:
Could this be something else other than a respiratory infection?
Do I need to see an exotic vet?
If I do, can anybody recommend one in the Southampton Area? I have them registered with Seadown vets in Hythe, Southampton.
Has anyone experienced getting a pup and always seeming ill?

I should also mention that when I got Errik, he was with his brothers and it was an odd number litter, as one of the pups had died just before I bought him. They said they were all thoroughly checked over before I brought him home. I called them straight away when I didn’t think Errik was right.

Sorry for the huge essay, thank you for reading. Pictures for cuteness

Hello, I am sorry to hear your little Errik isn't well. Can I ask if Errik is displaying any other symptoms such as a runny/crusty nose and laboured breathing? I ask as my 🌈 piggie Susie suffered from respiratory issues since birth and it could well be a similar situation to hers.

In my experience seeing an exotic vet is paramount when it comes to piggies, as they hold a wealth of knowledge and experience compared to general vets. If you go to the guinea pig info section of the forum you will be able to access the recommended vets page from there.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Only a hands on vet check will give you answers to these questions.
I hope you can get to the bottom of his issues and he makes a good recovery from any issues.

You don’t need necessarily to see an exotic vet as such - being an exotic vet does not always mean they have any specific piggy knowledge. Provided the vet you see is piggy experienced and knowledgeable then this can be a general, small animal vet.
This is our vet list. This vets on here are recommended by members as being knowledgeable. Recommended Guinea Pig Vets

Hi Sorry to hear Susie suffered too. He doesn’t have laboured breathing my other boy did all his life.
I have an appointment this evening, so fingers crossed they will know. Thank you for the link that was really helpful
